We Are Studying…

Math – Students are learning about place value, counting money, rounding and regrouping.  Students are also increasing their speed and instant recall of basic addition and subtraction facts.  Some students have even earned their addition and subtraction “license” and are working on their multiplication facts!

Reading – Students are learning 6 comprehension strategies and how to use them while reading.  A large focus in third grade is learning how to write a response to a comprehension question using evidence from the story to support the answer.

Writing – We are currently writing narrative stories about an adventure in a haunted house with a focus on description. Prior to this, students wrote descriptions of a beautiful autumn day.  Be sure to read them when you come for conferences.

Science – Our first Science unit is Rocks and Minerals.  Students are learning about the 3 rock groups (igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic) and the rock cycle.  We have discussed properties of rocks and have conducted some simple experiments.  Soon we will be turning our focus to the study of minerals.
