Homework for the week of May 14th

 

Brit. Lit.- We have out field trip to the Renaissance Faire on Friday.  On Wednesday, you will select your costume for Friday and for next Tuesday at Saint Clements Castle.  We will finish our study of Shelley and Keats.  You will also begin reading The Turn of the Screw by Henry James.

 

 

English 11H- We will complete The Catcher in the Rye this week.  You will have a series of activities to complete.  We will also complete vocabulary lesson 16 with a quiz on Friday.

 

English 9H – You will continue reading The Odyssey and we will begin our class project of the Homeric Tapestry. The book should be complete by the end of next week.  We will also work on Vocabulary lesson 16 and there will be a quiz on Friday.

 

English 9 – The power point presentations on due on Friday.  We will continue viewing stories of myths and legends in class. There will be a vocabulary quiz on Friday…the words are on the board in my classroom.  Be prepared to deliver your power points on Monday.  Remember that you need 7-10 slides.

 

 

 

 

Homework for the week of April 23rd

 

Brit. Lit. – We will spend this week working on Shaw’s Pygmalion.  We will also spend time finishing the last of the Romantic poets (Keats and Shelley).  Please remember to bring in money and permission slips for the Renaissance Faire and for our visit to Saint Clements Castle.

 

English 11H- We will begin Macbeth this week.  We will complete Vocabulary lesson 13 this week and you will have a vocabulary quiz on Friday.  Please bring your Macbeth and activity packets to class each day.

 

English 9 – We will do vocabulary from “The Birds” on Monday and you will have a quiz on those words on Friday.  We will spend this week reading the novella and discussing various elements of symbolism, metaphor and tone.

 

English 9H – We will do Vocabulary Lesson 13 this week and you will have a quiz on Friday.  We will share the mythology scrapbook that the class created and begin our study Homer’s The Odyssey.  We should complete the first 3 books by the end of the week.  Please bring your book and activity packets to class each day.

Plans for the week of April 10th-

 

British Lit- We will finish up our work in the Lit. Circles.  We will share presentations on Oliver Twist and Wuthering Heights.  Friday is reserved for 13 Reasons Why.

 

English 11H- We will spend time this week sharing your major papers/projects on Huck Finn.  We will also finish our discussion of Twain, slavery and censorship. If time permits we will begin our work on Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Friday is reserved for Catalyst.

 

English 9H- We will begin building our scrapbook of Greek gods, goddesses, and myth.  We will have the laptops in class for 3 days.  The final pages are due on Friday.  The second draft of your Romeo and Juliet papers are due on Tuesday, April 11th. Remember to attach your 1st draft also. Friday is reserved for Catalyst.

 

English 9- We will finish reading Romeo and Juliet.  You will also see the final scene of 2 movie versions and fill out a viewing form. You will be writing a paper after vacation. Friday is reserved for Catalyst.

 

Plans for the week of March 26th

 

British Lit. – We will spend this week on Coleridge and Byron as we continue to move through Romantic poetry.  You will continue your reading of Dickens or Bronte.  There will be an assessment on your novel early next week.

 

English 11H – We will complete our unit on satire and spend time with Huck Finn.  We will also spend time discussing censorship and the new version of Huck that was published last year.  The Common Application will be completed and handed in.

 

English 9/9H- We will finish watching the film of Romeo and Juliet and complete a variety of activities on the play.  English 9H will work on a major essay on the play and that will be due next Wednesday. In English 9, we will finish reading the play and discussing elements as we move through it.

 

Plans for the week of March 19th

 

British Lit. H. – We will spend this week with the British Romantic poets.  On Monday we will discuss your music choices for songs of innocencve and experience a la William Blake.  We will spend the remainder of the week reading the work of William Wordsworth, the great granddaddy of the romantics.  For homework each night you are expected to read Oliver Twist or Wuthering Heights.

 

English 11H- There will be a vocabulary quiz on Monday.  We will spend the rest of the week with Huck Finn and how Mark Twain uses satire in the novel.  You will have a packet on satire to complete.  We will also read excerpts from the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.  You will be writing your own “autobiography” as you complete the college common application this week for homework.  There will be an assessment on Huck Finn on Friday.

 

English 9H- Wewill have a vocabulary quiz on Monday.  We will continue our reading of Romeo and Juliet in class. You will have some extension activities for homework.  On Friday, we will have a Shakespearean actress join us for the period to discuss and perform parts of the play.

 

English 9 – Your Hemingway hero work is due on Monday.  We will begin our studies of William Shakespeare and Romeo and Juliet this week.  We will complete the play in class.  Homework will be light until we move into the play.

 

 

Plans for the week of March 12th-

 

British Lit. – We will discuss Jane Eyre for one class period.  We will also begin our reading of Wuthering Heights or Oliver Twist.  In class we will divide our time between William Blake and William Wordsworth.  On Friday, your assignment on William Blake’s Songs of Innocence and Experience is due.

 

English 11H – On Monday you will work on Vocabulary Lesson 12 and you will have a quiz on those words on Friday.  On Tuesday you will have an in-class writing assignment that looks at gun control.  We will spend a lot of time this week looking at satire in its various forms.  You should finish Huck Finn by Friday.

 

English 9 – We will spend several days this week doing writer’s workshop on the laptops.  You will continue working on your major essay on The Old Man and the Sea and “The Perfect Storm.” Remember to use specific examples and list page numbers in your rough drafts.  These papers are due on Friday.

 

English 9H- On Monday you will work on Vocabulary Lesson 12 and you will have a quiz on those words on Friday. We will spend this week reading and working on Romeo and Juliet.  We will have a guest speaker/Shakespearean actress on Friday speak to our class.

 

Plans for the week of February 27th -  I hope that you all had a happy, healthy vacation.  I am sorry that I was ill with pneumonia and missed an entire week with my classes.  I do appreciate the work you completed with Mr. Waz who wrote that all of my classes were excellent and extremely cooperative. We will begin getting back on schedule this week.

 

Brit. Lit. – We will spend time on the early romantics this week.  We will spend most of our time discussing “What is a romantic?” and breaking down the categories.  Our focus will begin with William Blake and Robert Burns. You will be responsible for completing all Jane Eyre projects and handing them in this week.

 

English 11H – We will review the works of Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman.  You will work with a partner to create a “Love Connection” between the two major American writers.  You will also have read the first ½ of Huck Finn.  On Monday, you will work on Vocabulary Lesson 13 and you will have a quiz on the words on Friday.

 

English 9H - On Monday, you will work on Vocabulary Lesson 13 and you will have a quiz on the words on Friday. We will finish the last of the powerpoints on Monday and Tuesday.  We will then spend all class time this week on Romeo and Juliet.

 

English 9 –On Monday, we will begin our review and group work on the 2nd ½ of The Old Man and the Sea.  You will be working with a partner in class, and will complete a series of activities at home.  We will also complete vocabulary exercises on Monday. And there will be a quiz on Friday.  You will also be tested on the novel at the end of the week.

 

 

 

 

Plans for the week of January 30th

 

British Lit. – We will spend the week completing our unit on satire of the 18th century.  Your satire assessment will be due on Monday, February 9th.  You have copies of Jane Eyre, and you should begin reading the novel.

 

English 11H – We will spend the week on the American Transcendentals.  On Tuesday you will begin decoding excerpts from Emerson and Thoreau.  There will be a series of assessments for you to complete.

 

English 9 – We will begin the novella, The Old Man and the Sea. Monday, you will complete a vocabulary sheet on words from the book.  We will read in class and you will have homework each night on the readings.

 

English 9H – We will spend time learning about Shakespeare.  You will work in small groups on a topic based on Shakespeare and his time.  These powerpoints will be presented to the class starting Monday, February 9th. We will begin reading the play in class on Friday.

 

 

Plans for the week of January 23rd

 

All of my classes will finish reviewing for exams.  Exams begin on Tuesday, January 24th.  Tuesday = D & C

Plans for the week of January 17 –

 

British Lit. – We will complete our unit on satire and read “A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift.  We will finish our literature circle study of Austin and Shelley.  All questions will be discussed and there will be a brief assessment on Friday. We will review on Friday and Monday for exams.

 

English 11H- We will continue reading Poe.  Tuesday night read “The Tell-Tale Heart” and Wednesday Night read “The Black Cat”.  Both stories are in the red Poe book. We will review on Friday and Monday for exams.

 

English 9H – We will finish our study of Hemingway and The Old Man and the Sea.  You will be working on the packet pages in small groups. We will review on Friday and Monday for exams.

 

English 9 – We will complete our study of the short story.  We will review for exams during the second half of the week.

 

 

Plans for the week of January 9, 2012 –

 

British Lit. H – We will begin our unit on Satire in the Enlightenment Period.  For homework each night you are expected to read and complete guided reading questions on Frankenstein and Pride and Prejudice.  The books must be completed for January 19th.

 

English 11H – We will complete vocabulary lesson 9 and you will have a quiz on those words on Friday.  We will have a quiz on Irving on Monday, and we will spend the remainder of the week reading and studying Poe.  You will have the opportunity to write a horror story later this week.  Details to follow.

 

English 9H – We will finish our study of the short story and begin our work on The Old Man and the Sea. You are expected to read 25 pages per night and complete the accompanying guided reading questions.  You will have additional pages in the packet to complete later this week. We will also complete Vocabulary Lesson 9 and you will have a quiz on the words on Friday.  Please note that there are more words for this week and all weeks that are ahead.

 

English 9- We will finish our work on “The Interlopers” and continue our work on grammar in your packets.  We will also begin the short novel The Old Man in the Sea in class.  There will be guided reading questions to accompany the text.

 

 

Plans for the week of January 3, 2012 –

 

British Lit. – This week we will finish our study of 17th century poetry including Donne (Wed.), Jonson (Thurs.) and the Sons of Ben on Friday.  Specific poems and sermons will be discussed in class and read for homework.

 

English 11H – On Tuesday we will finish our work with the patriots.  Wednesday and Thursday we will work on Washington Irving short stories including “Rip Van Winkle”, “The Devil and Tom Walker” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.”  Bryant’s “Thanatopsis” will be under study on Friday.  Homework over the weekend will be to read “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Raven” by E.A.Poe.

 

English 9/9H – We will continue our work with elements of fiction and their application in short stories.  We will read “Walter Mitty” on Tuesday and “The Scarlet Ibis” later in the week.  Both stories are in the anthologies.

 

 

 

Plans for the week of December 19th

 

We will spend this week doing CAPT and SAT prep activities in all of my classes.  We will also finish our reading of 13 Reasons Why this week.  Remember to bring in your holiday items for our special events.  The most important part of this week is to enjoy this wonderful time of year.  You have no homework this week, and you will have no homework from me over the Christmas break.  I hope you to spend lots of time with family and friends, and you reflect on all of the great things happening in your lives!  You all deserve the very best that this season has to offer!  Stay safe and enjoy ever minute!  See you in 2012!

 

Instructional Plans for the week of December 12, 2011 –

 

You will have a test on Shakespeare and Lear on Wednesday.  Your final paper on Lear will be handed in on Thursday.  In class we will be working on writers of the Renaissance other than Shakespeare and Marlowe.

 

English 11H – The 2nd draft of your Crucible/Scarlet Letter essay will be due on Wednesday.  We will begin working on writers of the American Enlightenment and American Revolution. You will have vocabulary Lesson 8 to complete on Monday, and you will have a quiz on the words on Friday.

 

English 9H – We will continue to work on CAPT preparation including “Reading for Information” practice exercises.  We will also be working on inferential reading in our unit on the short story. You will have vocabulary Lesson 8 to complete on Monday, and you will have a quiz on the words on Friday.

 

English 9 – We will begin a unit on short stories and continue to apply the elements of fiction to them.  We will also continue practicing for the CAPT test in reading.

 

 

Instructional plans for the week of December 5, 2011-

 

British Lit. – We will work on our thank you notes to the troops on Monday.  We will work on Shakespeare for the remainder of the week.  Your homework each night will be to work on your MAJOR King Lear paper that is due on Friday, December 9.  Your questions on The Christmas Carol are due on Wednesday, and you will have a brief assessment of the work on Thursday.

 

English 11H – We will work on our thank you notes to the troops on Monday.  We will have a final review on The Scarlet Letter on Tuesday and a test on the book on Wednesday.  Your major comparison/contrast essay (draft 1) will be handed in on Friday for peer editing.

 

English 9H –We will work on our thank you notes to the troops on Monday.  We will work on Charles Dickens this week.  Your questions are due on Tuesday and you will have an assessment on Wednesday.  We will also continue doing CAPT exercises in “Reading for Information” this week.

 

English 9 – We will work on our thank you notes to the troops on Monday.  We will spend this week working on CAPT strategies to help you in “Response to Literature” and “Reading for Information.”  This work will be completed in class.

English 11H – We will be working on Vocabulary 7 exercises this week and you will have a quiz on those words on Friday. English 11H – On Monday we will work on vocabulary.  You will finish The Scarlet Letter this week.  Expect a quiz on the book on Wednesday, and a vocabulary quiz on Friday.  You will read 2 chapters per night.

 

English 9H – We will work on vocabulary on Monday, and you will have a quiz on Friday.  This week you will work on your Of Mice and Men projects and you will present them to your class on Friday.

 

English 9 – You will spend this week working on your Of Mice and Men project to present on Friday.  We will also be viewing the DVD.

 

 

 

Instructional Plans for the week of November 7th:

 

British Literature H – We will finish the film on Shakespeare on Monday.  Each day in class we will be working on King Lear together on CD.  Each night for homework you will be reading Doctor Faustus for an assessment on Monday, November 14th.

 

English 11H –On Monday we will work on Vocabulary Lesson 6, and you will be quizzed on Friday.  Monday night you will read chapters 17 and 18 of The Scarlet Letter and finish any vocabulary work not completed in class.  Wednesday night you will read chapters 19 and 20.  Friday you will have the vocabulary quiz and will read chapters 21 and 22.

 

English 9H – You will have vocabulary lesson 6 to work on in class and to finish for homework.  We will begin a class jigsaw activity based on your packet on Of Mice and Men.  You will also select a group to complete 1 of 5 written project assignments on the novel.  That will be your homework for the week.  You will have a vocabulary quiz on Friday.  There will be a test on Of Mice and Men on Wednesday, November 16th.

 

English 9 – You will have a new vocabulary lesson based on the words in the Of Mice and Men packet.  We will work through activities in class and you will finish them for homework this week.  You will have a vocabulary quiz on Friday. There will be a test on the novel on Thursday, November 17th.

 

Instructional Plans for the week of October 31st – (NO SCHOOL MONDAY & TUESDAY BECAUSE OF THE SNOW STORM)

 

British Literature H – We will begin reading King Lear and continue reading it in class throughout this week.  You will be reading Doctor Faustus on your own each night for homework. You will have a packet on Lear to answer questions or complete writings as we move throughout the play.  Everyone should have the assigned Lear paper topic.  The Faustus test will be on Monday, November 14th.

 

English 11H- We will continue reading The Scarlet Letter for homework.  We will not complete vocabulary this week because of the shortened time.  Wednesday night read Chapters 13 & 14, and Friday night read Chapters 15 & 16.

 

English 9H & English 9 - We will not do vocabulary this week because of the shortened time.  We will complete reading Of Mice and Men and you will have several pages in the packet to complete.

 

 

Instructional Plans for the week of October 24th:

 

British Literature H- We will continue to share “The Star Wars Cantina Tales” in class.  We will also begin our movement into the Renaissance.  You need to read the introduction to the period in the black textbook.  We will also read and discuss the examples of Italian and English sonnets found in the text.  You will need to write a sonnet in one of those formats, using the “love of nature/nature of love” themes that we discuss in class.  You may not use the word “LOVE” in your poem.  These will be due on Monday, October 31st.  We will also explore a piece of Edmund Spenser’s The Faire Queene.

 

English 11H – On Monday you will work on Vocabulary Lesson 5.  Exercises are due on Tuesday and the quiz will be on Friday.  We will continue reading The Scarlet Letter. Chapters 9, 10 for Tuesday, 11,12 for Wednesday, 13,14 for Thursday.  We will discuss the book as we move along and you will have packets to work from.  We will also read “Half-Hanged Mary” this week.

 

English 9H – Vocabulary Lesson 5 for Monday.  Exercises will be due on Tuesday, and the quiz will be on Friday.  We will continue our reading of Of Mice and Men in class, and you will be working on pages from the packet each night.

 

English 9 –We will continue reading Of Mice and Men in class.  You will have guided reading questions to work on each night.  You will also have vocabulary from the novel to work on throughout the week.  We will continue our parts of speech work each day.  Vocabulary quiz will be on Friday.

 

Instructional Plans for the week of October 17th:

 

British Lit. – We will finish our discussion of “The Wife of Bath’s Tale,” work on “The Miller’s Tale” and “The Reeve’s Tale.” You should be thinking about your character’s tale for our class Star Wars Cantina contest.  Final copy of 4 pages in heroic cuplets will be due on October 25th.

 

English 11H – We will be working on Vocabulary Lesson 4 this week.  Complete the exercises for Tuesday and we will have a quiz on Friday.  We will read the poem “Half-Hanged Mary” in class, and we will work on The Scarlet Letter.  Plan on reading about 25 pages of that book each night, and answer the guided reading questions that I give you.

 

English 9H- We will complete vocabulary lesson 4 this week.   Quiz will be on Friday. We will spend our classes this week doing a walk-thru of a CAPT “Response to Literature” test section.  For homework, you will read 1 chapter per night in Of Mice and Men and complete the guided reading questions.  Please bring grammar packets to class each day also. You will also work on draft 2 of The Miracle Worker formal essay.

 

English 9 – We will spend this week working on the CAPT test.  We will also begin an in-depth study of parts of speech. You will also have the opportunity to begin a formal essay on one of the two topics I give you about The Miracle Worker. More details to follow.

British Lit. – We will spend this week discussing the Pardonner and his tale.  You will also read “The Wife of Bath’s Tale.”  Continue working on your character’s tale for homework each night.  The final paper will be due on Monday, October 17th.

 

English 11H – We will have our test on The Crucible on Wednesday, October 12th.  We will then begin reading The Scarlet Letter by Hawthorne.  You will need to have completed the first 5 chapters for Monday, October 17th.  No vocabulary during this short week.

 

English 9H – You will have your final test on The Miracle Worker on Tuesday, October 11th.  You will finish your formal essay on The Miracle Worker for Friday, October 14th. No vocabulary during this short week.

 

English 9 – You will have your final test on The Miracle Worker on Friday, October 14th.  You will work on an informal essay based on a brief writing by Helen Keller.  No vocabulary during this short week.

 

 

Instructional Plans for week of October 3rd:

 

British Lit. – Chaucer character charts are due on Monday, October 3rd.  This week you will be reading “The Nun’s Priest’s Tale” and “The Pardonner’s Tale.”  You will be filling out the analysis forms found in the 2nd Chaucer packet.  You will also be responsible for creating a character to participate in our class pilgrimage.  Details will be given in class, but info is also available in the 2nd Chaucer packet.  Character description is due on Friday, October7th.

 

English 11H – Final Crucible projects are due on Friday, October 7th.  We will complete vocabulary lesson 3 this week and you will have a quiz on Friday.  We will have a final assessment on the Crucible next week.  This week we will continue our discussions and view the film.

 

English 9H – We will continue viewing and discussing The Miracle Worker.  You will also work on Vocabulary Lesson 3, and be quizzed on those words on Friday, October 7th. You will have the final test on the play on Tuesday, October 11th.

 

English 9 – We will finish reading The Miracle Worker and begin to watch the film this week.  You will be responsible for completing the vocabulary work for Act 3.  You will be quizzed on Act 3 on Thursday, and you will have a vocabulary quiz on Friday.  These will be three worksheets to complete on the play also.

 

 

Instructional Plans for the week of September 26, 2011:

 

British Lit. – We will finish up our work on Arthurian legend.  The packets will be completed and turned in on Wednesday.  We will begin Chaucer on Wednesday.  You must have read “The General Prologue” and completed the character handout for Monday, Oct. 3rd.

 

English 11H – Vocabulary will be finished for Tuesday so that we can go over it.  There will be a vocabulary quiz on Friday.  We will finish reading The Crucible and you will finish writing the draft journal entries for Monday, Oct. 3rd.  You will have until Friday, October 7th to “spiff” them up for a final grade.  Vocabulary must be complete for Tuesday’s class so that we can go over the words.  Quiz will be Friday.

 

English 9H- We will spend the week discussing and working on the elements of fiction as they appear in The Miracle Worker.  Specific expectations will be given daily in terms of when work is handed in.  Vocabulary work is due Tuesday, and there will be a quiz on Friday.

 

English 9 – We will continue reading The Miracle Worker.  We will continue our discussions of the elements of fiction as they apply to the play.  Vocabulary will be completed in class on Tuesday and there will be a quiz on those words on Friday.

 

 

Instructional plans for the week of September 19th:

 

British Lit – We will continue our studies of King Arthur and the completed packet will be due on Thursday.  The class will begin our work on the miracle play “Noah’s Flood” and we will also begin looking at traditional ballads.  All ballads in the textbook should be read. Your homework over the weekend will be to select a contemporary ballad that fits the criteria of a traditional one.  You will bring to class on Monday your music (on tape or CD), your lyrics and a brief explanation of your choice.  Remember…how is it a ballad?

 

English 11H –  You will have one  journal entry to complete each night as we continue to read through The Crucible.  There will be a total of 6 journal entries due that represent the four modes of writing that we have discussed in class. You may be asked to share these nightly writing assignments in class. You will have Vocabulary Lesson 2 on Monday  and you will have a quiz on Friday. You will have additional activities to complete in class…they are in your packet.  You will also take a writing assessment and a grammar assessment in class this week.  We should be into Act 3 of the Crucible by the weekend. English 9H –You will have Vocabulary Lesson 2 exercises for homework on Monday, and you will have a quiz on those words on Friday. We will continue our reading of The Miracle Worker.  You will have activities assigned from your packet as we move through the play.  Please check with your homework buddy for details.

 

 

English 9 – You will have vocabulary from Act Two of the Miracle Worker to complete.  I hope to have completed Acts One and Two by the weekend. You will have a vocabulary quiz on Friday.  We will be completing a variety of activities based on the Miracle Worker, and they will be distributed daily.  You will also be wrting a short in-class journal response to the play.

 

 

Instructional plans for my classes:  Week of September 12th

 

British Literature H – Monday we will begin our group work on Beowulf and our exploration of “the hero.”  Your mini-projects on Beowulf will be due (and shared) on Thursday.  Thursday night for home work, you will read the introduction to the Medieval Period in your textbook.  Thursday night’s homework will begin exploring the tales of King Arthur and the beginnings of the romance in English Lit.  Friday we will read and discuss “Le Mort d’Arthur” and “Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.”  There will be several sheets to complete over the weekend.

 

 

English 11H – We will begin our vocabulary study on Monday.  You will be expected to know parts of speech, definitions, synonyms and antonyms for a quiz on Friday.  We will go over the vocabulary exercises that you complete for homework on Tuesday. We will continue our in-depth study of The Crucible by Arthur Miller. We will do the reading of the play together in class.  You will be responsible for completing selected questions on the 2 acts we cover this week.  You will also begin your Crucible writing/journal project.  Explanations will be given in more depth in class.  You will also be taking diagnostic reading and grammar assessments in class this week.

 

English 9H/9 – We will begin working in William Gibson’s The Miracle Worker this week.  We will begin our review and application of the elements of fiction to this contemporary classic drama. We will do most of the reading in the classroom, and you will be responsible for completing activities from our packet while you are home.  You will also have vocabulary lesson to complete on Monday, and there will be a quiz on those words on Friday. You will also take diagnostic reading and grammar assessments this week in class. You will read and complete the questions on 2 poems “The Blind Man” and “Deafness.” 

 

 

 

Instructional plans for my classes: Week of September 6th

 

 

British Lit. Honors – We will begin with the Anglo-Saxon Period of Brit. Lit.  You will be expected to read that introductory material in the text.  You will work on solving several riddles from the Exeter Book, and look at several short pieces in Old English.  With luck, we will begin Beowulf and plan for an assessment due next week.

 

 

English 11 Honors – We will begin with the earliest American literature and you will be expected to read the introduction in our textbook. We will also begin reading The Crucible, a modern play about the Salem Witch Trials of 1692.

 

 

English 9 Honors – We will begin with our exploration of the elements of fiction.  This will be the overarching idea that we will apply to all of the genres we examine this year. We will start with some easy stories (for review) and then begin applying the concepts to more challenging works of literature.
