To Kill a Mockingbird

English 10----Assignment is due on Tuesday

Defending Boo Radley!

Despite the best efforts of Heck Tate, word got out that Boo Radley killed Bob Ewell. Now, Boo  finds himself on trial for murder. But Boo does have something in his favor: the best legal representation that money can buy----YOU!

For this assignment, you and a partner must defend Boo Radley in court. You will be required to draft introductory and closing remarks as well as two reasons why Boo should be set free.

One partner should take the following:

-Opening speech: in your opening speech you outline your case. Try to find two reasons as to why Boo Radley’s actions were justified. Try to persuade the jury to see things your way. BE CREATIVE---BE persuasive!

-Your first argument.

The other partner should take…

-Argument two.

-Closing remarks.  In these remarks you recap your major arguments. In addition, you should appeal to the jury. There are many ways to do this and you are free to be creative.

Each part should be at least half of a page (but not much more).

Your work should be submitted together. You will be graded along with your partner.

This will count as a homework assignment.

Mr. Czarkowski

English 10

To Kill a Mockingbird writing assignment:

You will write a 1 1/2 to 2 page letter as a character from To Kill a Mockingbird.

You will be the character. This means that you will be writing in first-person.

You are free to come up with your own idea, but I offer up to you a few suggestions:

--A letter from Boo to the Finch children. In this letter he could explain why he left those items in the tree, what his life is like, why he chooses to stay indoors, and how he can justify his actions at the end of the story

--A  letter from Tom Robinson to Helen Robinson in which Tom attempts to justify his actions.

--A letter from Bob Ewell to Mayella (or the Maycomb Tribune) in which he expresses his desire to kill the Finch children and/or his disgust with the community.

--A letter from Mayella to Tom apologizing for her actions.

 ____________________________________________________________________________________

Please proofread your work. Write in twelve point Times New Roman font.

Please double space your work or skip every other line if you decide to write by hand.  10 points will be deducted if you fail to do this.

Don’t obsess over capturing the character’s dialect. If you would like to try, that’s fine, but you are not expected to do this.

The assignment is due on Friday.

English 9 Honors: Parts of Speech Exercise.

The first pioneers on the Great Plains encountered many kinds of dangerous animals. Huge herds of bison and grizzly bears were a menace to the early explorers. The most ferocious beast of the plains was a female grizzly bear protecting her cubs. Neither the bison nor the grizzly was the most feared animal on the frontier. None of the creatures, including the fearsome rattlesnake, were dreaded as much as the skunk. Oh, you may say, that is ridiculous. Yet is the truth. Skunks were not alarming because they smelled bad, but because the so often carried rabies. Since there was no cure for rabies in those days, the bite of a rabid skunk was certain to be fatal. The small black and white creatures were carriers of the doom and struck terror into the stoutest hearts.

English 10

To Kill a Mockingbird Editorial.

Editorial (noun): An article in a publication expressing the opinion of its editors or publishers (Webster’s Dictionary).

In an editorial, the newspaper writer (usually the editor) attempts to persuade the reader to see things from his/her perspective on a particular subject.

Objective: You are to write a newspaper editorial about the Tom Robinson verdict. You want to convince the reader that Tom Robinson was innocent.

A Sample Editorial

Outline:

Title: Begin with an interesting title that would catch the reader’s attention.

Paragraph 1 (Introduction/Context): In your introduction you need to provide context. In other words, briefly summarize the case, what were the circumstances around the case, and the verdict. Then, in the final sentence of the paragraph, state your position.

Paragraph 2 (Argument #1): In this paragraph you state your strongest argument. Rely on the book for details and evidence. Chapters 18, 19, and 20 are perfect for this.

Paragraph 3 (Argument #2): Move to your second strongest argument.

Paragraph 4 (Conclusion): In your final paragraph, you need to restate (in other words) your initial position. In one to two sentences, briefly restate (in other words) both of the arguments that you presented. Finally, end on a DIRECT quote from Atticus’s closing argument in chapter 20 (203-205).

If you need (or would want) to include a title for your newspaper, you can write as the Maycomb Tribune or you can make up your own newspaper name.

Essay is due on Monday, January 23rd.

Miracle Worker Essay

Mr. Czarkowski

In a four-paragraph essay you will defend the following thesis statement:

In order to help a person, one may sometimes have to make him/her do things that he/she doesn’t want to do.

(Notice both my use of the word one rather than you and my use of the word he and him refer back to the pronoun one. Since one is singular, you can’t use they to refer back to it.)

Paragraph 1: Introduction.

Provide a brief outline of your topic. Include the two/three works that you will be writing about (one will be The Miracle Worker by William Gibson). Provide the thesis-statement.

Paragraph 2: The Miracle Worker example.

In this paragraph you explain how this thesis applies to The Miracle Worker. Provide a DIRECT quote from the play.

Paragraph 3: Example from outside of class.

Provide an example from a book/movie/television show, historical event, etc. that relates to your thesis statement. The only restriction is that this                                work must be from outside of class. It cannot be anything that we have             read or viewed this year or in previous years.

                        Paragraph 4: Personal example

Provide an example from your own life that supports the thesis: in order    to help a person, one may sometimes have to make him/her do things                            that he/she doesn’t want to do.

Please do not put down anything that you would not feel comfortable                               sharing.

For this paragraph first-person pronouns may be used.

Interesting Title

Helping isn’t always easy. Often, a helping hand looks threatening to someone who is in serious trouble. While it is certainly easier to let that person continue on his/her destructive path, it is not right. In order to help a person, one may sometimes have to make him/her do things that he/she doesn’t want to do.  In The Miracle Worker by William Gibson, Annie Sullivan (finish the sentence)… In (YOUR STORY) by (PROVIDE THE AUTHOR OR DIRECTOR), (the main character)….. I, too, have had challenges that seemed difficult to overcome, but I faced them and it worked out for the best.

Mr. Czarkowski

Short Story Essay.

WHEN WRITING, DOUBLE-SPACE AND USE 12 POINT FONT!

Note: Always make a creative title for your essay.

Also, essays count as 25% of your final grade. A zero can really set you back!

Part one: Pick ONE of the following four options.

Creative:

1.) Write a continuation for a story that we have read. The problem that students often find with ‘modern’ short stories is that they end too abruptly. With that being said, attempt to add onto the story. You can use up to two pages to give any story that we have read a more satisfying conclusion; or, if you desire, you can make it much more mysterious. This continuation can be set the next day or years later. Before writing this, please let me know what story you intend to continue. In addition, watch out for unnecessary dialog that simply eats up space.   Length: 1 ½ to 2 pages.

2.) Draft a proposal for an episode of The Twilight Zone. For this proposal, you will write a two-three paragraph plot synopsis with names of the characters and major events. I don’t need a narrative, just a summary of what would happen in your episode. In your third-fourth paragraph, explain what you are trying to say. What is your observation about humanity?  You should understand that The Twilight Zone deals with supernatural events, but the themes are always rooted in the real-world. Length: 1 ½  to 2 pages.

Traditional:

3.) Using specific evidence from the story answer the following: What was the author’s observation of humanity? In other words, what was the theme of the story? Please find three examples from this story that support your argument. For this response, please use a quote from the story. Also, mention the author and the title of the work. Avoid Sparknotes for this assignment---Develop your own thoughts. Length: 1 ½ to 2 pages.

4.) Using specific evidence from the story, answer the following: “(Pick a story) should be taught in schools for the following reasons…” Please provide two-three reasons as to why this story should be taught in schools. For this response, please use a quote from the story. Also, mention the author and the title of the work. Length: 1 ½ to 2 pages.

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT: PLEASE COMPLETE ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER.

THESE PARAGRAPHS ARE DUE ON FRIDAY

English 9 Short Story Presentations.

In groups of two, pick ANY of the short stories in your Prentice Hall Literature textbook. I recommend the following:

“The Necklace” by Guy de Maupassant

“The Good Deed” by Pearl S. Buck

“The Scarlet Ibis” by James Hurst

“The Sound of Thunder” by Ray Bradbury (found in a different textbook).

However, let me restate that ANY short story in the textbook (except “The Gift of the Magi”) can presented.

Task one: understanding the story.

Part one: read and understand the story. If this requires reading the story again, please do this. In fact, I would recommend that you read your story at least twice. If you are still struggling, please see me for extra help.

Part two: Identify the essential elements of fiction found in the story (plot, setting, character, conflict, theme, and point-of-view). Be able to graph the plot, identify the narrative style, state the theme, and locate the major conflict of the story.

Task two: researching and presenting the story.

Part three: Get some background on the author and his/her time period. Research the setting of the story. What about the setting should the reader know to better understand what is happening? What has been written about the author and the story?

Part four: Present your story in a Power-point presentation. This presentation should not exceed six minutes.

What I expect to be covered and how long it should take you to cover it.

1.) Plot synopsis: approximately one minute

2.) Context (what the author is like/time period/etc): one minute.

3.) How does the main character change in the course of the story: one minute

4.) What is the author saying about people (in other words, theme): one minute.

5.) Another work that is similar: one minute.

------Extra time: one minute.

Task three: writing about the story.

Part five: Each one of your group members will ANSWER one of these prompts. These answers should be approximately one to two pages in length. Please remember to organize your responses with paragraphs. Specific details and quotes from the story, might make your argument stronger.

Prompt #1: What does this work say about people in general? Please find two examples from this story to support your argument.

Prompt #2: Was your story a good piece of literature? Please provide two-three reasons as to why or why not your work was a good piece of literature. Whenever possible, use specific examples from the story.

Presentations will count for a quiz grade.

Written responses will count as an essay grade.

Twilight Zone response:

Paragraph #1: One theme (author’s observation of humanity) of the Twilight Zone episode could be…

Paragraph #2: Dr. Bill Stockton is an example of a (flat/round) character because…

English 10: Mr. Czarkowski

“Shaving”

As a group, you must submit four assignments (this means that each member has to complete one assignment). Unless otherwise indicated, each assignment should be roughly a page in length.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Assignment #1: Write a critique, or review, of this story. It’s important to know that when you are writing a review, you need to provide evidence. You can’t simply write down your opinion. Find three points on which to base your opinion.

Assignment #2:  Connect this story to another work (movie, television show, book) that holds similarities.  Find at least two significant connections.

Assignment #3:  Answer this question: “What was the more important accomplishment: winning the football game or shaving his father?” Like always, use three examples from the story to strengthen your argument.

Assignment #4: Find an example of symbolism in this story. Locate it with a specific page number and then attempt to explain its figurative significance. You may explain more than one symbol.

Assignment #5: Find seven words that you are unfamiliar with and define them. After, use these words in a sentence that shows you understand the meaning of the word and how it’s used.

Assignment #6: Write a version of this story from the perspective of Barry’s father. What would the father notice? What would he be thinking? Would he know anything that his son did not?

Assignment #7: Whose accomplishment was more impressive, Jerry (from “Through the Tunnel”) or Barry? Attempt to use evidence from both stories.

Hints from Mr. C:

Always proofread your work before you pass it in.

Include ONE direct quote from the reading.

Make sure to refer to SPECFIC instances in the book. Whenever possible, use dialog from the characters or actions in the book. You don’t need to include the entire conversation or paragraph.  A phrase or two will suffice.

Don’t summarize the entire story. You should simply include parts that support your argument.

It’s PERSPECTIVE, not prospective.

15 MOST COMMON SURFACE ERRORS:

1.) Lack of agreement between subject and verb:

Verbs has to agree with their subjects. (Edit: Verbs have)

Studying the origin of the human species are very interesting. (Edit: is instead of are)

2.) Lack of agreement between pronoun and antecedent (the word the pronoun replaces):

“A Hemingway Hero never shows their emotions.” (Edit: change to “his emotions”)

3.) Misuse of Their/They’re/There and other homonyms:

Whenever their are two quarterbacks in the room you know what there are talking about.

The Red Sox lost too the New York Yankees bye a score of 6-4.

The fireman was effected by the sight of the crying child (Edit: affected, not effected).

4.) Run-on sentence:

Don’t write a run-on sentence you have to punctuate it.

5.) Faulty parallelism (Structure):

I like skiing better than to swim. (Edit: I like skiing better than swimming).

The party-goers ate, drank, and dancing.

Mary Williams wants financial independence, emotional stability, self-esteem, and to find love. (Edit: …self-esteem and love.)

6.) Awkward phrasing- While not technically a grammatical error, this involves words, phrases, or clauses that might be somewhat uncommon, possibly obsolete, or completely silly. Sometimes these mistakes are not SURFACE errors, but rather errors in construction.

In “The Secret Life of Walter MittyMitty’s wife takes an angry tone of her husband when he doesn’t listen to her.

7.) Unnecessary shift in tense *(When writing about literature, use the present tense)*:

When Tom came home he sees a bear as it ran across his yard.

Although Emily Dickenson writes poetry most of her life, very little of her work was published until after her death.

8.) Spelling:

9.) Capitalization:

10.) Wordiness: Unnecessarily wordy expressions.

On the condition that you do not do your homework you shall be indentured in C105 the duration of the lunch period.

In this passage, as you probably have surmised, it presents a clear example that good is superior to evil.

(Edit: On the condition = If, shall be indentured = will stay, the duration of = for, as you probably have surmised = erase, presents a clear example = shows/illustrates/supports)

11.) Comma splice:

The garbage started to smell because I didn’t take it out, the next day I wrote this sentence.

12.) Missing or misplaced apostrophe:

The boy’s soccer team lost their first match of the year. Tony and Marys’ son scored the only goal. Although the team was upset they still had a good nights’ rest.

(Edit: boys’, Tony and Mary’s, night’s rest).

More often than not:

Singular = ‘s

Plural = s’

13.) Missing comma with a non-restrictive element:

Joe a die-hard Giants fan lost his tickets to Sunday’s game.

Sometimes people gossip as Mr. C has observed because they want to be interesting

14.) Dangling or misplaced modifier: Modifiers need to be next to what they are describing as to avoid confusion.

Greasy and dripping with cheese, John ate thirteen hamburgers at the Super Bowl party.

Joey watched the climber scale the rock, petrified.

(Edit: Petrified, Joey watched the climber scale the rock. Joey watched the petrified climber scale the rock. Joey watched the climber scale the petrified rock.)

15.) Sentence Fragment:

Because the room was on fire.

The city of Hartford.

Running around in circles and screaming.

Was created in 2005 by Mark and Tom.

(Edit: I ran out of English class because the room was on fire. The city of Hartford is exciting during UCONN football season. Running around in circles and screaming, Mr. C delivered an inspiring lecture. The grammar robot was created in 2005 by Mark and Tom).
