Academic Support News

All students in academic support are working to improve study skills, organizational skills, self-advocacy and to learn strategies to build on their strengths, both personal and academic.

Study Skills

Students will work on vocabulary targeting the curriculum in their academic classes. We will learn different strategies to master vocabulary.

Organization

As students prepare for the demands of high school, we work on taking responsibility for being prepared with appropriate materials for class, writing down assignments in the agenda, keeping an organized binder, and being responsible for getting assignments in on time.  For some of us, being organized is a life-long challenge while other students have mastered this aspect of being a successful student.

Self-advocacy

Self-advocacy is all about asking questions or asking for help so that students get the support and information they need.  Some students have not yet learned this important skill.  As students mature and become aware of their strengths and weaknesses, they can step up the challenge of being pro-active about talking to teachers and asking for clarification.  In middle school students can be a part of the planning and placement team and start to take more responsibility for their own educations. In addition, they can start to be aware of their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and begin to form goals for high school and beyond.
