HKHS continues to prepare for NEASC Accreditation which is scheduled for October 2010.  As a part of the preparation process, the HKHS administration has developed the following:

 

HKHS Mission Statement
 
The mission of Haddam-Killingworth High School is to provide a personalized     and collective experience through which students are challenged to develop the knowledge, skills, and work ethic to contribute to a global society.

NEW HAVEN REGISTER Youth of the Year

 

Jessica Moore was honored as one of the 2010 New Haven Register's "Youths of the Year."  Jessica was recognized during a luncheon at Amarante's Sea Cliff in New Haven on Sunday, May 16.

 

 

 

COMCAST Leader and Achiever

 

The Comcast Foundation honored Ryan Blewett with a $1000 scholarship at the State Capitol Building on Tuesday, June 8. Ryan was one of only 39 college bound seniors from the Comcast communities to receive the award. The Leaders and Achievers recognition is based on community service, leadership skills, positive attitude, and academic achievement.

  

 

 

LEO CLUB

 

The Lions Club in Killingworth is forming a student-based community service group called the Leo Club.  The Leo club will operate as a full affiliate of the Killingworth Lions thus offering students a great model for developing teamwork and organizational skills while serving the community.  Larry Leone, school counselor, is the faculty HKHS contact.  Recruitment will begin this September 2010 at the high school.

 

By way of background, Leo clubs were formed by Lions Clubs International to provide youth with an opportunity for personal development and to make community contributions.  There are educational opportunities in the areas of leadership, experience in teamwork, and an opportunity to develop personal characteristics such as integrity and achievement of excellence.

 

 

 

HKHS FILM FESTIVAL AWARD Winners

 

The following students received awards for the script writing and actual film productions that were created as part of their TV Production class:

 

            Ryan Blewett, first place $100

            Luke Chase and Stephen Taylor, second place $37.50 each

Clair Heleneck, third place, $50

 

 

 

 HKHS Student to receive award from Middlesex Chamber of Commerce

 

The Scholarship Committee of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce awarded Katrina Manzi the Raymond E. Baldwin Scholarship at their Annual Dinner on June 9, at the Crowne Plaza Cromwell. The Baldwin Scholarship is in the amount of $2000.

HOLIDAY TELETHON SELECTED FOR AWARD

 

The Connecticut Student Activities Conference selected HK's Holiday Telethon as a recipient of the 2010 Thomas R. Flanagan Activities Memorial Award. The award was presented during the undergraduate awards program held on June 2 at HKHS.

 

Congratulations to Mr. Lewis and his students for putting on such a professional and charitable production.

 

 

The Haddam Killingworth Youth Lacrosse Association is concluding a very successful first year with 62 HK students participating from grades 1 to 8.  Any HK boys and girls in grades 1 to 8 who are interested in participating in summer and fall clinics or in the season next spring are welcome to email us at info@hkyouthlax.org.  You will be placed on our email distribution and advised of all events that we are planning.  You may also visit our website at www.hkyouthlax.org.

 

 

 

HKYFS would like to announce a new support group for parents of children with ADHD. This group will run on Thursdays at 5pm from June 24th- July 29th. The group will meet at HKHS, room to be announced. The group will be mostly member-led and will focus on topics pertaining to raising a child with ADHD. A donation of $10/household (whether this is a family, couple, or individual) for the 6 week series is suggested. Please contact HKYFS at 860-345-7498 for more information or to reserve your spot! HKYFS would like to announce the start of a new girl's group focusing on self-esteem and body image. This group will be offered for two different age groups and will focus on topics ranging from peer pressure to healthy eating habits and everything in between. Group A (ages 8-10) will be offered Mondays; June 28-August 9 (no group July 5); 9:15am. Group B (ages 11-14) will be offered Wednesdays; June 30- August 4; 9:15am. Both groups will be held at HKHS, room to be announced. Any girls who are also participating in the HK Rec camp will be escorted to and from the group each week by a camp counselor. Haddam-Killingworth Early Childhood Council invites parents and childcare providers of children birth to five in the HK area to take part in our needs assessment survey during the month of June. The links are as follows:

Registrations for week 1 of HK Recreation Summer Camp are due by 6 pm on Wednesday, June 16th.  Any registrations received after that will be subject to a $25 late fee. For more information, please call the HK Recreation Dept. at 345-8334.

Please accept my apologies for not including the following information in a previous Bulletin.  Jaret Kulmann, deceased husband of BES 1st Grade Teacher Angie, served the students of HES as a Building Sub/Long-term Substitute from 1999 to 2000 and as a 1st/2nd Grade Multiage Teacher during the 2000-2001 & 2001-2002 school years.

 
 

Care-Free Celebrations from RSD 17 Food Services 


Whether it's a birthday celebration or a special occasion, let Care Free Celebrations do the work for you.  We offer a variety of items that can be picked up or delivered to a classroom.  In order to accommodate all requests, a one-week notice is required.  Look for flyers announcing this new, low cost option now available through the district's food services department.

The last day of the 2009-2010 school year and the date for the graduation for the Class of 2010 is Friday, June 18th.
