Frequently Asked Questions about H1N1 Influenza Vaccine

Q: Is the H1N1 vaccine produced differently than seasonal influenza vaccine?
A:   No. This vaccine is being produced using the same processes and facilities that are used to produce the currently licensed seasonal flu vaccine.  H1N1 would have been contained in the seasonal flu vaccine if it was not too late to include it.

Q: How much will it cost to receive the H1N1 Vaccine?
A:  It is free.

Q:  Can the seasonal Flu vaccine and Novel H1N1 vaccine be administered at the same time?
A:  Yes. H1N1 and seasonal Flu vaccines can both be given together when both are given as a shot. The only time H1N1 and seasonal Flu vaccine cannot be given together is when they are both given by nasal spray.

Q:  Does H1N1 Flu Mist have Thimerosal present in it?
A:  No. The Flu Mist does not contain Thimerosal.

Q:  Where will we able to get the H1N1 Vaccine?
A:  Some private physician offices have registered to receive and distribute the H1N1 vaccine.  Other physician offices are not able to add this assignment to their work load and will be in collaboration with Connecticut River Area Health District to direct their patients to open clinics that will be set up to provide the vaccine.

Q:  If our child has already had the "Flu" should we still get the H1N1 Vaccine?
A:  Yes. Unless your child had a nasal swab that was laboratory tested positive for H1N1 you should still receive the vaccine.

Q:  Who is LAIV, the nasal spray vaccine, contraindicated for:
A:  * Anyone allergic to eggs
*Adults 50 years of age and older and children younger than 2 years old.
*Children with one or more episodes of wheezing within the past year
* People who have chronic health conditions such as:
-heart disease                         -kidney or liver disease
-lung disease                           -metabolic disease, such as diabetes
         - asthma                                   - anemia
* Anyone with certain muscle or nerve disorders such as seizure disorders or cerebral palsy.
*Anyone with a weakened immune system
* Children or adolescents on long term aspirin treatment
* Pregnant women
* Anyone who has ever been diagnosed with Guillian-Barre syndrome
* If you have any questions regarding whether you or your children should take this vaccine, you should consult your primary physicians. Your doctor is the best person to advise you as to whether or not the Flu Mist is the right vaccine for you.
