Week of November 17, 2008 I am pleased to announce
the recipients of this year's Middlesex Shoreline
Superintendent/Student Recognition Awards of Excellence. Tara
Cordner (HKHS, grade 12) and Ryan Blewitt (HKHS, grade 11 )are to be
presented their awards at a luncheon scheduled for this coming
Monday. These annual awards are presented by area school
superintendents to students in recognition of their community
service, academic achievement and leadership in the school
community. Congratulations Tara and Ryan Tara
Cordner Tara was selected for this recognition for her
quiet leadership in co-curricular and community activities, as well
as her determination and ability to excel academically. She is able
to pursue her interests independent of her peers and possesses a
very strong sense of citizenship. Academically, she ranks in
the top ten percent of her class and has challenged herself since
entering the freshman year. She is well respected by faculty
as evidenced by her awards in Exploring Science, French, and
Economics as well as being a CAPT Scholar. Since her freshman year,
Tara has been part of the Drama Club where she enjoys the
opportunity to experience a wide variety of stage roles. She
exudes a strong sense of community through a variety of
activities, organizing and playing in a Dodge Ball Tournament
to raise money for an animal shelter, editing the senior section of
the yearbook, accumulating countless community service hours
cleaning up beaches, setting up for the local famers market, and
representing her peers at Health Community, Healthy Kids Coalition
meetings. In her junior year she was the recipient of the Mr.
Holyoke Book Award for her community service, leadership, and
scholarship. Tara has learned to balance her many passions
both in and out of school. These are just a few of the many
activities that truly illustrate that Tara stands out amongst her
peers. She plans to major in history on the college level and
pursue a career in the education field. Ryan
Blewett Ryan is a self-motivated, and well disciplined
both in and out of the classroom. He is a student who excels
academically in his honors and AP classes. Although Ryan was
unsuccessful in his run for class office, this has not prevented him
from following through on this desire to work on behalf of his
peers. He has been extremely instrumental in both planning
fundraiser events as well as the junior and senior proms. Ryan
is an active, well-organized leader and does not need to have a
title to pursue his passions. A Varsity Swimmer since his
freshman year, Ryan is a role model for his teammates, keeping them
motivated and focused whether they are at a practice or a meet. He
is also the Historian for H-K Players and is active in the
International Culture Club, Envirothon, Geocaching, and works on the
school newspaper: The Cougar Chronicle. These past two summers Ryan
was a camp counselor at a Connecticut Boy Scout Camp, where he
started as a camper five years ago. In addition, Ryan is well
respected by the faculty and his peers. All of these
activities are evidence of Ryan being a truly well-rounded
individual who possesses a very strong sense of
loyalty. Contact: Chuck Lewis Telephone:

Haddam-Killingworth High School will be hosting its twentieth annual
Holiday Show telethon December 23. The live student-produced
program hosts a "Shoreline Idol" competition which raises money for
a different charity each year. The charity to which this
years' Holiday Show is benefiting is the Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation, a group dedicated to finding a cure to one of
childhood's most debilitating diseases. HKTV was inspired to
choose to JDRF as its charity, because of a letter written by local
Haddam resident Kim Alonzo. Kim's son Ben copes with type I
diabetes on a daily basis. Her son's school recently held a
"Caps for a Cure" JDRF fundraising event with much success.
The 2008 Holiday Show which will air from 8:00 to noon on December
23rd, will raise money for the Connecticut Chapter of JDRF.
Shoreline residents can turn to Comcast channel air 18, and view the
"Shoreline Idol" finalists performing live. The ten Idol finalists
have been selected from auditions held by shoreline-area high
schools. Students and members of the community can vote for
their favorite Idol singer by donating a dollar or more to the
Holiday Show. An Idol winner will be chosen on January 23,
2009, where the student with the most votes will be named the 2008
Shoreline Idol winner. Television students at
Haddam-Killingworth are proud to benefit such a worthy cause as
JDRF. This will bring children like Ben hope that Juvenile
Diabetes is just one step closer to a
cure. The Board of Education
Subcommittee listings have been updated and are available on the
