Week of March 16,
2009
On the evening of May 30, 2009
between 6:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., the Central Administration of the
Regional School District 17 (serving the towns Haddam and
Killingworth) are hosting the first annual
Haddam-Killingworth Hall of Fame banquet in
the cafeteria of Haddam-Killingworth Middle School located on Route
81 in Killingworth.
This event is
significant considering the fact that the first five
inductees are the first and only coaches of
the sports they continue to remain active coaching.
Haddam-Killingworth High School was founded in
1975 with Richard "Dick" Dupuis (Track & Field), Patsy
Kamercia (Field Hockey), Mark Brookes (Baseball, he was a nominee
for National Baseball Coach of the year two years ago and has been
inducted into the CT Hall of Fame this past year), Richard Langer
(Volleyball) and Dennis O'Rourke (Football) being the coaches as the
various sports were introduced to the student body. These
individuals continue as the only coaches the respective programs
have ever seen. This is a unique and unprecedented occurrence in
Connecticut high school sports history and makes them deserving of a
high degree of recognition.
The event is planned as a
buffet meal with a notable sports figure providing an
inspirational keynote address. Each recipient will be
presented with a Citation of Achievement from Governor Jodi Rell,
recognition from the Connecticut Interscholastic Sports Committee
(CIAC) and formal induction into the Haddam-Killingworth Hall
of Fame.
Expected attendance is 300
guests.
Please consider attending a fine evening of
overdue recognition to five respected individuals who collectively
have contributed 175 years of service to high school student
athletes in the towns of Haddam and Killingworth.
Tickets are now on sale for $40.00 per person and are
available by contacting Lisa Roy, Central Office Receptionist, at
(860) 345-4534 or by e-mail reqeust at HKHall @
rsd17.org.
The Regional School District 17 Board of Education and
Superintendent Gary Mala continue to seek public input from the
Haddam and Killingworth communities regarding the 2009-2010
operating budget. Community members are invited to share their
ideas by submitting them via e-mail to gmala@rsd17.org, in person at
Board of Education meetings or my sending a note or letter to the
Office of the Superintendent of Schools. A timeline for all
budget-related meetings can be found on the Regional School District
17 website at http://www.rsd17.org/boe/budgettimeline.shtml.
All meetings are open to the public.

REFERENDUM in each respective town on the Board of Education's
Budget for 2009/2010
The public is more than
welcome to attend any of the budget workshops and any of the Budget
Committee meetings. Certainly our Budget Committee is eager to
communicate effectively with the town officials in both Haddam and
Killingworth. As a Budget Committee responsible for
articulating the educational needs of the school district in a
fiscally responsible manner, we have the difficult task of striking
a balance between our educational needs and our fiscal
responsibilities. Our committee will be monitoring activity
and actions at the legislative level most carefully, and wherever
possible will be providing input in order to protect both the
educational and financial interests of the district and our
towns.
Kelsey Bartolotta and Julie Vegliante were
selected as All State Cheerleaders recently. This is an
outstanding accomplishment and is the first time HKHS has had young
women named as All State for Cheerleading.
Congratulations.
The Middle School Southern Regional Music Festival was held two
weeks ago. There were 45 Middle Schools that took part and 10 of
those students (approximately 400 in all) were from HKMS - 6 in
Chorus and 4 in Band. The level of talent from all who participated
was extraordinary.
The Project Graduation
Decoration Committee will begin meeting in March twice a
week on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30pm in rooms B116 and/or
A133 (Photography Room) to create the wonderful
decorations that will adorn the HKHS gym on the
evening of the alcohol and drug free graduation celebration in
June. If you have any artistic talent or want to become
involved in this rewarding event, please contact Suzanne Mazzotta at
(860) 345-9225 suzmazzotta@snet.net or Maryanne Larosa at
malarosa@comcast.net. The decorations committee is also
looking for a female mannequin that has movable arms.
Please contact Suzanne or Maryanne if you are able to lend
one.
Project Graduation is seeking volunteers to sign up to
chaperone the night of Project Graduation. Also, help is
needed picking up and delivering food donations.
Please contact Kaycee Blancaflor at KCCallahan@uks.com if you
are able to help.
The Killingworth Youth League is sponsoring a trip to see the
New Britain Rock Ctas take on Trention (NY Yankee affiliate) at Rock
Cats Stadium on Friday, May 1st. All tickets are $5 and
proceeds will benefit KYL. There will be a firework display
after the game. The deadline to purchase tickets is April
10th. For more information please contact Sally at
860-227-8124.
