I wish to offer my sincere apologies to the girl's swim team for inadvertently forgetting to mention them in the last Weekly Message.  Please consider supporting them and their season by attending some of their meets.  Best wishes for a successful season.

At the last meeting of the Board of Education, Education Subcommittee, the High School administration completed a presentation outlining the school's instructional schedule beginning next school year.  The presentation is available on the District's webpage at www.rsd17.org under the Curriculum & Instruction section.

The District extends a warm welcome to Sabrina Houlton of Haddam as the newest member of the Regional School District 17 Board of Education.  Mrs. Houlton is completing the term associated with the seat previously occupied by Diane Stock Ph.D. Best wishes to Diane for much success in her future endeavors and best wishes to Sabrina as she begins her tenure on the Board.

The HKHS has received notification that The New England Association of Schools and Colleges NEASC) will conduct an accreditation evaluation site visit at the high school on October 24, 2010 through October 27, 2010.  This visit is a part of the ten year accreditation cycle for all Connecticut High Schools (and other secondary schools throughout the world).

In April of last year, Lou Nyman passed away after living a long and fruitful life.  Among his many passions was his dedication of all HK sports.  His two grandsons played for the school, with the last graduating as a member of the Class of 2000.  Even after his last grandchild's graduation, Lou still attended all sporting games on a regular basis.  He supported sports participation of not only his own family members, but also the numerous high school students with whom he came in contact with while frequently attending high school athletic events. (This notice was submitted by Lou's grandson, Randall M. Emshwiller)

DID YOU KNOW THAT

1.  The Board of Education maintains liaisons to the Boards of Selectmen in both Haddam and Killingworth.

2.  The District is in the process of installing a waste oil burner in its transportation facility/. The unit will burn waste oil removed from the bus / van fleet. This will result in the use of less #2 fuel oil.

3.  The District has implemented the use of plastic trays and metal utensils in all of the schools' cafeterias.  This is the result of a suggestion made by Caitlin Lawrence, a student at Killingworth Elementary School,   who contacted the Superintendent of Schools with her idea to preserve the environment.  Look for feature articles in the local press as well as a story scheduled to be aired on Channel 18 in the near future.
