I wish to offer my sincere apologies to the
girl's swim team for inadvertently forgetting to mention them in the
last Weekly Message. Please consider supporting them and their
season by attending some of their meets. Best wishes for a
successful season. At the last meeting
of the Board of Education, Education Subcommittee, the High School
administration completed a presentation outlining the school's
instructional schedule beginning next school year. The
presentation is available on the District's webpage at www.rsd17.org
under the Curriculum & Instruction
section. The District
extends a warm welcome to Sabrina Houlton of Haddam as the newest
member of the Regional School District 17 Board of Education.
Mrs. Houlton is completing the term associated with the seat
previously occupied by Diane Stock Ph.D. Best wishes to Diane for
much success in her future endeavors and best wishes to Sabrina as
she begins her tenure on the Board. The
HKHS has received notification that The New England Association of
Schools and Colleges NEASC) will conduct an accreditation evaluation
site visit at the high school on October 24, 2010 through October
27, 2010. This visit is a part of the ten year accreditation
cycle for all Connecticut High Schools (and other secondary schools
throughout the world). In April of last year,
Lou Nyman passed away after living a long and fruitful life.
Among his many passions was his dedication of all HK sports.
His two grandsons played for the school, with the last graduating as
a member of the Class of 2000. Even after his last
grandchild's graduation, Lou still attended all sporting games on a
regular basis. He supported sports participation of not only
his own family members, but also the numerous high school students
with whom he came in contact with while frequently attending high
school athletic events. (This notice was submitted by Lou's
grandson, Randall M.
Emshwiller) Haddam-Killingworth Middle
School (HKMS) will host a Scholastic Book Fair from Wednesday,
October 8th until Friday, October 17th in the Library/Media Center
by the PTO. To view times and more information about the Book Fair,

Elementary School (KES) will host a Scholastic Book Fair from
Monday, October 20th through Thursday, October 23rd, as a fundraiser
for the PTO. Families, teachers and community members are
invited to attend the Fair, which will feature the theme of "Book
Fair Safari!" The "Book Fair Safari" will offer
specially priced books and educational products, including new
releases, award-winning titles, children's classics, interactive
software, adult books and current bestsellers from many
publishers. In addition to purchasing books for family and
friends, you can help the school build classroom libraries by
purchasing books for teachers through the Classroom Book
Wishes. Book Fair Safari hours are: Monday, 8AM -
3:30PM; Tuesday, 8AM - 8PM Wednesday, 8AM - 3:30PM Thursday
8AM - 2PM The Book Fair will be held in the KES
gymnasium, 340 Rt. 81 in Killingworth. All visitors are asked
to enter the building at the Main Entrance and sign in at the office
before heading to the gym. For more information,

663-3408, or visit the KES Book Fair website at
http://bookfairs.scholastic.com/homepage/kes. There
will be an HK SEPTA workshop, " IEP
101" with guest speaker Mr. Rick DeMatto, Interim Director
of Pupil Services, held on Wednesday, September 24th from 6-8p.m. at
the Brainard Library, Route 154 Haddam.
DID YOU KNOW
THAT 1. The Board of Education
maintains liaisons to the Boards of Selectmen in both Haddam and
Killingworth. 2. The District is in the process
of installing a waste oil burner in its transportation facility/.
The unit will burn waste oil removed from the bus / van fleet.
This will result in the use of less #2 fuel
oil. 3. The District has implemented the use of
plastic trays and metal utensils in all of the schools'
cafeterias. This is the result of a suggestion made by
Caitlin Lawrence, a student at Killingworth Elementary
School, who contacted the Superintendent of Schools with
her idea to preserve the environment. Look for feature
articles in the local press as well as a story scheduled to be aired
on Channel 18 in the near
future. There
continues to be changes made to the district website to keep you
better informed about many things happening in the district.
Please bookmark www.rsd17.org and visit it
often. Please visit the District Calendar
located on the district's homepage (www.rsd17.org) to see when the
Open House programs are scheduled to be held. We look forward
to seeing you at them. A reminder that the
district utilizes the Honeywell Instant Alert system to communicate
with parents during times of emergency or to deliver messages of
high importance. Please be sure that you are registered with
Honeywell (link available at www.rsd17.org) and have indicated how
you wish to have messages received. If you have questions
regarding this, please do not hesitate to contact the Principal of
any one of our schools for
assistance. If you wish to
have an announcement included in any Weekly Message, please forward
the text to Cindy Fetteroll, Administrative Assistant to the
Superintendent of Schools at
fetterollc55@rsd17.org. If you have any
suggestions regarding the Weekly Message, please contact Gary S.
Mala, Superintendent of Schools at
gmala@rsd17.org. Enjoy your week
and thank you for your continued
support. Gary Gary S.
