Week
of March 3, 2008 - REVISED
-A
few revisions needed to be made to this week's Weekly Message.
-Recently,
the school district has experienced tremendous difficulty
communicating with individuals who use comcast.net for e-mail
service. This difficulty was due to the district being
identified as an address suffix which was recognized as spam for
some unknown reason. Because of this, our outgoing e-mail to
external Comcast accounts was blocked. We have identified a
solution and are taking the necessary steps to resume normal
communications. Thank you for your patience as we finalize our
work on this issue.

HKHS
Student Matthew McEwen requested that the following information be
included in the Weekly Message.
-Did
you know that 854 million people are hungry? That's about
equal to the entire population of the western hemisphere. 35.1
million Americans - one in ten households - live in households that
experience hunger or the risk of hunger. About one-third are
children. These are only a few of the staggering statistics
and you'd be surprised why the numbers are so high. Won't you
consider attending a Hunger Banquet, sponsored by HKHS Youth in
Action, on Friday, March 7th at 6:00 pm in the high
school's cafeteria? For more information about this creative,
educational fundraising event or to make a reservation, call Matt
McEwen, Youth in Action President, at 638-7535. Suggested
donation: $8 adults/$6 students. Child care will be
provided.

-The
Connecticut Mastery Tests will be administered from March 3r
d- March 31st. The Direct Assessment of
Writing will be given Tuesday, March
4th.
-I
highly recommend the reading of the following
books:
A Whole New Mind, Daniel Pink, Riverhead Books, New York,
2006 (ISBN 1-59448-171-7)
The New Meaning of Educational Change, Michael Fullan,
Teachers College Press, New York, 2007 (ISBN
978-0-8077-4765-0)
-One
of the actions included in the District's Strategic Plan calls for
the establishment of "sister schools" with schools from outside the
continental United States. We are particularly interested in
establishing international relations with schools in Asia and
Europe. If you know of any individual who may have an
international contact who could assist the district with
establishing such relations, please contact Gary S. Mala,
Superintendent of Schools at (860) 345-4534 or gmala@rsd17.org.
-The
District is in the process of establishing a "Speakers' Bureau"
comprised of names and contact information of local residents who
have expertise in an area which could be integrated into the
curriculum of the various content areas. Our hope is to have a
resource list of people who may be called upon periodically to
present to different classes as students explore topics included in
the district's curriculum. If you are interested in being
placed on such a list, please forward your name, contact information
and an explanation of your particular area of expertise to Cindy
Fetteroll, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools
at fetteroll44@rsd17.org.
-If
you have thoughts on the 2008-2009 Regional School District 17 Board
of Education Budget, please feel free to e-mail them to gmala@rsd17.org, superintendent@rsd17.org or mvaughn@rsd17.org.
-The
2008-2009 Superintendent's Proposed Budget will be accessible on the
school district on Wednesday morning, March 5, 2008. Printed
copies will also be available at the Central Office of the school
district as well as each town library and town hall.

REFERENDUM in each
respective town on the Board of Education's Budget for
2008/200
The
public is more than welcome to attend any of the budget workshops
and any of the Budget Committee meetings. Certainly our Budget
Committee is eager to communicate effectively with the town
officials in both Haddam and Killingworth. As a Budget
Committee responsible for articulating the educational needs of the
school district in a fiscally responsible manner, we have the
difficult task of striking a balance between our educational needs
and our fiscal responsibilities. Our committee will be
monitoring activity and actions at the legislative level most
carefully, and wherever possible will be providing input in order to
protect both the educational and financial interests of the district
and our towns.
-All
questions received regarding the district's budget for the 2008-2009
school year and responses to each will be posted on the district's
website at www.rsd17.org.
