SPECIAL EDITION
-The Board of Education and district would like
to extend its sincere congratulations and best wishes to the top ten
ranked students of the Class of 2008.
Edith
Hanson Valedictorian Edith
Hanson, daughter of Stanley and Gail Hanson of Haddam, is the
Valedictorian of the Class of 2008. Edie's long list of
academic honors include Excellence in Geometry, French, Science,
History, English, Latin, and Drawing. She has also received
Achievement in English, Algebra 2, Biology, Pre-Calculus Honors,
French. Edie has also been recognized as a Haddam-Killingworth
CAPT Scholar, a recipient of the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science
Award, and was inducted into the National Honor Society, as well as
the French Honor Society. Edie was the recipient of the
Harvard Book Award and named one of the New Haven Register's Youth
of the Year for academic achievement and school involvement.
Edie has also been very involved in several co-curricular activities
such as S.A.D.D. where she has been extremely active as President in
her senior year and Vice-President in her junior year, Math League,
High School Bowl, Tech Club, Strategic Games Club, National Honor
Society, and French Honor Society. As a dedicated three-season
athlete, Edie has been involved in Cross Country, Indoor Track, and
Outdoor Track. Edie will be attending University of Rochester in the
fall. Emily Neal
Salutatorian Emily Neal, daughter of David and Sarah
Neal of Haddam, is the Salutatorian of the Class of 2008. Emily's
academic honors include Excellence in Geometry, Principles of
Science, Algebra 2, Modern World History, and, Pre-Calculus;
Excellence, Achievement, and Recognition in French; and Recognition
in AP Biology, Latin, English 11, and, AP U.S. History. Emily is
also recognized as a Haddam-Killingworth CAPT Scholar, and was
inducted into the National Honor Society and French Honor Society.
Emily is also a four-year member of both the High School Bowl and
Math League teams, as well as a two-year member of the S.A.D.D.
Committee. In her junior year, Emily was the recipient of the Yale
Book Award. This past year, Emily received the honor of Commended
National Scholar. Emily will be attending Kenyon College in Ohio
this fall. Amy Chamberlain
Third Amy Chamberlain, daughter of Robert and Marianne
Chamberlain of Haddam, ranks third in the Class of 2008. Amy's
academic honors include Excellence and Achievement in English,
Biology, and Spanish. Amy was also recognized as a CAPT
Scholar in her sophomore year and in her junior year was the
recipient of the Dartmouth book Award which is designed to encourage
intellectual excellence and to recognize student achievement.
She was also inducted into both the National Honor Society and the
National Spanish Honor Society. Amy has dedicated her time to
the Class of 2008, serving as Secretary for all four years.
Amy has been an avid athlete since her freshman year, playing soccer
and serving as a Tri-Captain in her senior year and running track
and serving as a Senior Leader. She also participated in
swimming in her freshman and sophomore years and has stayed active
by teaching swimming lessons as well as life guarding. Amy
will be attending Suffolk University this fall where she will be in
their Honors Program studying Business Administration and
Spanish. Joshua Hudson
Fourth
Josh Hudson, son of David and Victoria Hudson of Killingworth,
is fourth in the Class of 2008. His academic Honors include
Excellence in Principles of Science Honors, Excellence in Biology
Honors, and Excellence in Chemistry Honors. Other awards include:
Achievement in Spanish 3 Honors and Recognition in Concert Band
Honors. Josh was recognized as a Haddam-Killingworth CAPT Scholar
and inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society in his junior
year. He was selected as the recipient of the Clarkson University
Book Award for Academic Achievement at the completion of his junior
year. Josh is an accomplished pianist, and, for several years, he
has provided musical support for plays and other events at different
schools throughout the district. He has completed more than 300
hours of community service. Josh will attend George Washington
University in the fall in preparation for his future career as a
physician. Christine Tischbein
Fifth Christine Tischbein, daughter of Walter and Dawn
Tischbein of Killingworth, ranks fifth in the Class of 2008.
Christine's academic honors include Excellence, Achievement, and,
Recognition in Spanish; Achievement in English, and Principles of
Science; and Recognition in English, Pre-Calculus, and, Chemistry.
Christine is recognized as a Haddam-Killingworth CAPT Scholar and
was inducted into the National Spanish Honor Society (two years
serving as Secretary), National Honor Society, and National Art
Honor Society, where she holds the position of Co-President.
Christine was also a two-year member of the swim team, and a four
year-member of the Elms City Girls Choir. As a junior, Christine was
the recipient of the St. Michael's Book Award. This fall Christine
will be attending Colby College in Maine (spending her first
semester in Spain). Hannah Donadio
Sixth Hannah Donadio, daughter of Marilee and Richard
Donadio of Killingworth, is ranked sixth in the class. She has
received numerous awards in English, history, Spanish, and
art. In addition to being a CAPT Scholar, Hannah was the
recipient of the Clarkson University Leadership Award. This award is
given to a student that demonstrates strong leadership, academics,
and community service. Hannah is also a member of the National
Honor Society and the National Spanish Honor Society where she has
served as treasurer for the past two years. Hannah also
possesses a strong interest in the arts and has been a member of the
National Art Honor Society since her freshman year.
Hannah stays active playing volleyball and was captain of the JV
team in her sophomore year, followed by Co-Captain of the Varsity
team in both her junior and senior years. To round out the
seasons, Hannah ran both indoor and outdoor track all four years and
was a Scholar Athlete. Hannah will be attending Quinnipiac
University where she will be studying physical therapy.
Mary Dornfeld
Seventh Mary Dornfeld, daughter of Kitty and David
Dornfeld of Killingworth, is ranked seventh is the class of
2008. Mary has been recognized for her strengths in English
and Latin. Mary has a passion for world languages and has studied
French, Spanish, Latin, and most recently, German, through the
Wesleyan High School Scholars Program. She has also
earned a Certificate of Honorable Merit on the National Latin
Exam. In addition to CAPT Scholar, Mary is a member of the
National Honor Society. As a junior, Mary received the Mount
Holyoke Book Award which is given to a female student that excels in
academics, leadership, and service. Mary has been competing with our
High School Bowl for the past two years and also serves as
Vice-President of our Fellowship Club. Mary has volunteered
many hours of community service to her church. Since freshman year,
Mary has run indoor track as well as outdoor track, and for several
seasons, has participated in cross country and field hockey.
Mary will be attending Gordon College where she will study Spanish.
Alyson D'Amato
Eighth Alyson D'Amato, daughter of Tim and
Joanne D'Amato of Higganum, ranks eighth in the Class of
2008. Her academic awards have included Excellence and
Achievement in English, French, Civics, Chemistry, and Band.
In addition to being a CAPT Scholar, she was the recipient of the
Smith Book Award and a two year member of the National Honor
Society. Ally has played the oboe since fourth grade and has
been notably recognized for her outstanding talent. She has
been a member of the Connecticut Music Educators Association
Southern Region Orchestra since freshman year as well as having been
selected for All-State Band and Orchestra. She was selected to
perform with the Music Educators National Conference Eastern
Division Honors Orchestra. Ally has also found time to hold
various leadership positions within several organizations
including President of the National Art Honor Society , Vice
President of Student Council, Secretary and Vice
President of Band Council, and President of the National
French Honor Society. Ally was also on the staff of our high school
Literary Magazine: Reflections, where she has contributed
articles as well as assisted in compiling several editions.
Ally will be attending the University of Rhode Island this fall
where she will study English. Abigail
Baecker Ninth Abby Baecker, daughter
of Peter and Ellen Baecker of Killingworth, is ninth in the Class of
2008. Abby earned the distinction of CAPT Scholar, and she received
Recognition in Spanish 5 AP in her junior year. She was selected to
participate in the Wesleyan University High School Scholars Program
as a senior. Abby was a member of the Swim Team for four years and
she was chosen as a captain in her senior year. She also
participated in both Indoor and Outdoor Track for four years serving
as a Senior Leader on both teams this year. In her junior year, Abby
was inducted into the National Honor Society and the National
Spanish Honor Society, where she served as Chapter President for two
years. Abby was a member of the Yearbook Committee in both her
junior and senior years. Abby will be attending the University of
Connecticut in the fall to study nursing.
Caroline McManus
Tenth Caroline McManus, daughter of Pamela and John
McManus of Killingworth, is ranked tenth in the class of 2008.
Caroline has received accolades in history, biology, and art.
She is a CAPT Scholar and was inducted into the National Honor
Society. Additionally, she was inducted into the National
Spanish Honor Society where she served as this year's
Vice-President. As a junior, Caroline was awarded the
Gettysburg Book Award for her strong interest in American
History. Caroline was further recognized for her leadership
ability and history passion and was selected to attend Laurel
Girls State held at Eastern Connecticut State University.
Caroline has been a valued member of Youth in Action which is
sponsored by H-K Youth and Family Services. Since her freshman
year, Caroline continued her commitment to excellence through sports
participation where she played soccer and ran indoor and outdoor
track. This year she also served as a Tri-Captain for
soccer. Caroline will be attending Boston College in the
fall. Thank you for your continued support of your school
