Dear
HES Families,
As you know, it can get quite hot in the halls and rooms
at Haddam Elementary. Today, your child may come home and tell
you that he/she went to a portable classroom, the library or the gym,
though they were not normally scheduled to do so. We made a
concerted effort to get every class in an air-conditioned room or
cooler part of our building for at least 45 minutes for the day.
(Teachers were happy to make some adjustments to schedules to
accommodate!) When students were scheduled for Physical
Education, the teacher did low-key activities that allowed students to
self-monitor and take breaks. Students were also allowed to
refill water bottles as needed throughout the day.
Due the heat and humidity, students did not go outdoors
for recess. To assist in making this decision, I consulted a
document called "Child Care Weather Watch". This gives
me a quick visual of how the temperature plus humidity might make
students feel. In checking this morning, the combination of heat
and humidity was in the zone that was potentially hazardous for outdoor
play. (This document also gives me information on temperature and
wind-chill for winter months.)
Thankfully, the weather is expected to get
cooler by tomorrow! (Let's hope the
storm stays far away.) I wish you all a safe and happy
holiday weekend!
