HES Announcements

Dear HES Families,

Welcome to the "Un-vacation Week"! Today we started off with a few jokes being read by students over our public address system.    We also had our first student trivia winner of the week who was able to tell us the name of the two presidents who appear on both coin and paper currency.  (Do you know the answer?)  We hope that the students enjoy this week and thank everyone for making the best of an unusual situation. We appreciate all of those who notified us of their vacation.  It really helped us to plan.

Un-Vacation Week Stats

80% of our students were in attendance today

12% of HES staff will be out this week due to vacation plans that could not be changed

100% of absent staff with classroom or "special area" responsibility are covered with a substitute teacher, with classroom having the same substitute teacher for the week.  Our absent support teachers made sure to collaborate with classroom teachers ahead of time to provide continued support for our students throughout this week.

100%--The student and staff attendance we hope to have on Monday, February 28th.  Have a great week everyone!

Connecticut Mastery Tests

This year's Connecticut Mastery Tests for all 3rd and 4th grade students in the district will run from March 7th - March 18th as follows:

March 7th (or before)--Practice CMT Test

March 8th--Direct Assessment of Writing

March 9th--Degrees of Reading Power

March 10th--Reading Comprehension (Session 1)

March 15th--Math (Session 2)

March 16th--Editing & Revising

March 17th--Reading Comprehension (Session 2)

March 18th--Math (Session 1)

All of the tests are scheduled to be no more than 45 minutes in length (excluding directions) with the exception of the Math sessions and Editing & Revision which are each 60 minutes long.  All initial testing will take place in the morning, however, students missing the group administration of a CMT test will have to make it up based on availability of test proctors.  We know that our students and teachers have been working hard and that their efforts will pay off!

Bucket Fillers--Writing from the Heart

Hopefully you read in the February newsletter that we would like to take some time to think about how we can apply the concept of bucket-filling in the lives of our families, friends and neighbors.  If you and your child have a "heart-warming" bucket filler story, think about writing it down so that we can share it with others.  We would like to create a bulletin board display and choose a few to read during the month of March.  Please have your stories in no later than March 3rd.

RSD17 Budget Presentations/Timelines

On March 1st, Superintendent Mala will present his recommended budget to the Board of Education.  After which time, Interim Superintendent, Dr. John Sullivan will be available to give this presentation to the staff and community.  We have tentatively scheduled Dr. Sullivan to present to HES families on Tuesday, March 8th at 6:30pm in conjunction with the PTO meeting.  We are still awaiting confirmation and will communicate again once we are sure about the date and time.  We hope you can join us.

Community Input sessions for the budget will be held on Monday, March 28th at the HKMS Student Commons @ 6:30pm and on Monday, April 4th at the Central Office Board Room @ 6:30pm.  The referendum will be held on Tuesday, May 3rd.

Update on Facilities Matters

1) The Facilities Department has communicated that the School Sign will be installed as soon as possible in the spring.  We are eager to get this going and thank everyone for their patience.

2) Primary Playground--I am in communication with our Facilities Director about the gigantic snow mound on the primary playground.  We are trying to work on making the playground useable by the spring.  If you have any ideas to help us achieve this, please do not hesitate to contact me at jharris@rsd17.org

HES SOUP LUNCHEON

Our HES PTO and The Riverhouse at Goodspeed are cooking up something delicious!  Please join them for a soup & bread luncheon on Tuesday, March 15th from 11-2pm at the Haddam Fire Station.   You can eat all you want for $5 if you dine in, otherwise it is just $5 per pint for take out.  What a deal! See attached flyer for details.
