Each year a number of questions arise over a variety of issues regarding
athletics at HK. The article below is intended to clarify many of those
issues.
I would like to add, that as someone who has been associated with HK
Athletics since the creation of the district, I am very proud of our sports
program not only because of our successes, but also how our staff and
administration see our student athletes as whole persons and not just
as athletes. We have an excellent coaching staff who I believe will provide
our athletes with a valuable experience.
- Haddam-Killingworth offers 24 sports spread out over three
seasons.
The vast majority of High School sports in Connecticut are governed by
the CIAC who set rules pertaining to State Tournament play and qualifications;
beginning and end of season dates; age and academic requirements; rules
pertaining to residence and school transfers; to name a few.
- HKHS rules and guidelines.
At the start of the season, coaches will provide Student athletes with
a booklet that describe HK rules and guidelines. In the past, Coaches
also distributed several other forms for Parents to complete and return.
Many of them will now be available online and we ask that you return them
to the coach in the beginning of their season.
- Athletics Emergency Information form is very similar
to the Emergency information form that goes to the School Nurse.
It is for the Coach and Trainer in case an emergency arises
during practice or games. We would like the coach to have this
on the first day of practice in the event that if something
happens on the first day, and a parent or guardian could not
be contacted, the form is vital to the trainer and/or the coach
to provide treatment.
- Parent Request For Transport form. Most athletes
are expected to travel with the team to an athletic contest.
Exceptions are EXTREMELY RARE. Some coaches do allow the athletes
to be taken home from the contest site by parents or guardians
if they have the appropriate form in their possession. It does
not work well for the coach if this is done at the last minute.
To be clear, the decision is up to the respective coaches.
- Parent Request For Transport By Another Party form. If
you anticipate that someone other than those designated for
a specific contest, they should use this form which should be
delivered to the coach before the contest. If there is someone
whom you approve for the season, the form should then be given
to the Coach at the beginning of the season.
- Sports physical form. The CIAC requires that
a valid sports physical be provided before a prospective athlete
can practice and/or compete for any CIAC member school. A valid
physical used to be one year. Due to certain insurance practices,
that has been extended a few more weeks. Frankly, valid physicals
are probably the biggest problem for parents and teams. Physical
appointments usually require significant advance notice, we
urge any parent anticipating that their child may participate
in sports, make their appointments far in advance. Again, the
dates for the start of sport seasons are on the Athletic Web
site.
- An informational form regarding school insurance will be distributed.
RSD 17 has insurance coverage for Athletes which basically will take
over if and when personal insurance is used up. If an athlete is injured,
you will be contacted by the school nurse as to what you will need to
do to make the insurance available if needed. You may also purchase
a policy pertaining specifically to athletics, but that is a matter
of choice.
- Coaches may also have a set of guidelines and rules specific to their
team. While these rules may not supersede the rules of the CIAC or RSD
17, they are a set of rules that parents and athletes are expected to
understand and follow.
