2012 Call for Nominations
The Haddam-Killingworth Hall of Fame has selected three inductees to the “Class of 2011” and will mark their selection at a special dinner in April. They are:
Former Haddam First Selectman Marjorie DeBold, current Selectman Robert Duval and baseball and basketball coach Tommy Thompson.
Marge DeBold is a longtime resident of Haddam and in addition to her service to the town as First Selectman, she has also been a member of the Board of Finance, Planning and Zoning Commission, a Deputy Registrar of voters, a teacher at both Burr and Haddam Elementary schools and an active volunteer, including her work as Director of Educational Programs for the Haddam Historical Society.
Bob Duval is serving his third term as a member of the Board of Selectmen, but is best known as a “father” to Haddam Little League and as a dedicated commissioner of the Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Authority. He was also a key player in bringing Haddam’s Great Hill Athletic Complex project to fruition.
Tommy Thompson is the first graduate of Haddam-Killingworth High School, where he was an outstanding athlete, to be selected to the Hall of Fame. For more than 25 years he has served as a coach, teacher and mentor to children and young adults in the HK community. He and his wife have also been dedicated foster parents.
The Haddam-Killingworth Hall of Fame was established in 2009 to honor those individuals who have shown exemplary commitment to the service of children or have demonstrated an outstanding record of service to the Haddam and/or Killingworth communities. The 2011 honorees will be inducted at a dinner to be held on Thursday, April 28th, at The Riverhouse in Haddam at 6pm. Tickets are $35 and are available by phone at 860-345-4534, or by e-mail at HKHall@rsd17.org. In addition, congratulatory ads may be purchased for the program booklet.
Note: Tickets must be purchased no later than April 12th. No tickets will be sold at the door. The deadline for purchasing program ads is April 18th. “The selection committee thinks it would be wonderful,” said Committee Chairman and 2010 Inductee Bob Baranoff, “if the community really comes out to show its appreciation for the long service of these dedicated individuals by being part of this special evening.”

A veteran mathematics teacher, a longtime school board member and the only director the Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department has ever had will become the three newest members of the Haddam-Killingworth Hall of Fame at induction ceremonies in June.
Michael Kish taught math at Haddam-Killingworth High School for 29 years until his retirement. During his tenure, Kish also served as Boys Head Basketball Coach, Girls Basketball Coach at both the high school and middle school, and as Girls Varsity Tennis Coach, among many other posts in Regional School District 17 athletics.
Robert Baranoff served for 8 years on the District 17 Board of Education, including one term as Chairman. His fifteen years of public service include five years on the Haddam Planning and Zoning Commission and six years with Haddam Little League. In nominating him to the Hall of Fame, District 17 Superintendent Gary Mala praised Baranoff as “an individual who speaks his mind, and does so using facts. He is passionate about ensuring that children reach their fullest potential.”
For more than 30 years,
Frank Sparks has been the face and voice of the Haddam-Killingworth Recreation Department as its one and only Director. First appointed to the post in 1976, Sparks has helped expand and evolve the mission of his department through the establishment of nearly a dozen programs, including Youth Soccer, Co-ed Volleyball, Summer Swim Team and the Cougar Aquatic Swim Team. He also served for more than 20 years as Head Basketball Coach at Haddam-Killingworth Middle School.
The Hall of Fame was first created in 2009 with the induction of five coaches, Patsy Kamercia, Mark Brookes, Richard Dupuis, Richard Langer and Dennis O’Rourke, all of whom not only established their programs with the opening of Haddam-Killingworth High School in 1975, but continue to coach at HKHS today. The Hall of Fame is not, however, limited to only those in athletics. Its criteria for induction include a commitment to children and outstanding community service. Nominations for 2011 are welcomed.
The 2010 inductees will be honored at a dinner and
awards presentation on Saturday, June 5, at Haddam-Killingworth Middle School,
starting at 6pm. Tickets are $30 for adults, $20 for students, and can be obtained at each of the District’s schools or by calling the Central Office at 860-345-4534, or by e-mail at
HKHall@rsd17.org. Congratulatory ads may also be purchased in the program book that will accompany the evening’s festivities. All are welcome to join in the celebration of these three outstanding leaders who have served their communities with honor and distinction.
