Welcome to Haddam-Killingworth High School, home of the Cougars
On behalf of all of us at Haddam-Killingworth High School, I would like to welcome you to the HKHS web page. Our school is located in Higganum, near the banks of the Connecticut River and serves almost 700 students in grades 9-12 from the towns of Haddam and Killingworth. The mission of our school is to provide a personalized and collective experience through which students are challenged to develop the knowledge, skills, and work ethic to contribute to a global society.
HK prides itself on its high academic expectations for all students. All freshmen are placed in either college preparatory or honors core academic courses; while students in grades 10-12 may select college preparatory, honors, or advanced placement courses. We also offer many diverse learning opportunities, such as the Wesleyan University High School Honors Program, Project Lead the Way, College Career Pathways with Middlesex Community College, Connections Internships, and Virtual High School.
It is our belief that all students benefit through their involvement in school life. We therefore place a strong emphasis on student participation in clubs, athletics, or other activities. We currently offer 25 athletic programs for young men and women and 35 different school clubs and organizations. Our hope is that each student will take part in at least one school sponsored activity.
Along with school involvement, we encourage our students to give back to their communities. As part of their graduation requirement, each student must complete a minimum of 30 hours of community service.
Haddam-Killingworth High School was accredited in 2000 by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and will host a visiting committee this October for re-accreditation. In preparation for the visit, our staff has been involved in an intensive self-study process.
Finally, I want to encourage you as parents to remain active in the lives and education of your children. Your involvement and support is both necessary and appreciated.
Sincerely,
Charlie Macunas
