MISSION STATEMENT
 
       The mission of Haddam-Killingworth High School is to provide a personalized and collective experience through which students are challenged to develop the knowledge, skills, and work ethic to contribute to a global society.
 
Expectations for Student Learning
 
Academic:    The  Haddam-Killingworth High School graduate will:

Civic:          The Haddam-Killingworth graduate will individually and collaboratively

            2. pursue goal
 
 
  1.                 CAPT Breakfast--- A CAPT Breakfast was held in our cafeteria on Thursday, October 22 to honor those students who achieved goal on all four areas of the Connecticut Academic Performance Test. The CAPT Scholars and their parents were treated to a full breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes, fruit, and assorted pastries. All CAPT scholars will receive a special stole to wear at their graduation.
 
Seven students received a special recognition letter from the Connecticut Commissioner of Education, Mark McQuillan for scoring at the Advanced level on all four tests. Those students are: Emily Berman, Jesse Eberl, Colin Caffey, Jill Griswold, Patrick Hudson, David McDowell, and Ashley Scully.
 
 
2.                 Commended Scholars - Four HK students were recognized as commended scholars in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship program. Those students were: Jared Bills, Melissa Buckley, Andrew Frederick, and Varun Ravishanker.
 
3.                 Bloodmobile - The Student Council is sponsoring a blood drive in conjunction with the American Red Cross. The blood drive will be held on Wednesday, November 18th from 7:30 am - 12:15 pm in the lower level of the media center. Adults are welcomed to attend.
 
4.                 Class of 2011 Wreath, Roping, and Poinsettia Sale -  Juniors will have order forms beginning on November 18th. Orders will be taken for 12", 16", and 18" wreaths; 75' of roping; and 6.5", 8.5", and 10" potted poinsettias. You may place orders by emailing  class advisor, Mrs. McGee at mcgeen33@rsd17.org. Orders are due by November 30th for delivery on December 3rd, or by December 7th for delivery on December 10th.
 
5.                 "COOL SCHOOL" --- HK will be featured on Channel 3 on November 20th as a "Cool School".  The television station will air live from our field house in ten minute intervals from 5:00 am to 7:00 am.   Channel 3 anchor Mike Hydeck visited the high school on November 3rd to meet the staff and will return on November 10th to visit classrooms and tape various programs. All students are urged to arrive at the field house on the 20th by 4:45 am. The school will provide a full breakfast of bacon, eggs, potatoes, bagels, muffins, fruit, juice, coffee and tea. Parents are also invited to join us for breakfast.  This is a great opportunity for our students to show the rest of Connecticut how much energy and enthusiasm they have. A pep rally is planned for that morning and all athletes are encouraged to arrive in uniforms or team jerseys. Cougar Den members are encouraged to wear their school colors. The student body is urged to dress in blue, yellow, or white.   Members of the school chorus and band will also perform that morning. A huge screen will be set up in the field house where students can watch themselves on TV in 'real' time. A week prior to the 20th I will attempt to gain an estimate of how many students, parents, and staff members plan on attending so we can prepare the appropriate amount of breakfast items. I hope to see many of you here.
 
6.                 Summer Reading - Last week, during our advisory period, associate principal Priscilla Luoma and I met with a handful of students who turned in a wonderful summer reading project on the novel entitled Speak.   Sharing thoughts on the novel between bites of chocolate cup cakes were: Grace Colonia-Hughes, Nicole Cianci, Amanda Pitruzzello, Lynsey Kirkby, and Kelsey Virgulto.  Other students were also invited to attend  but were either busy or had forgotten.
 
7.                 HK's  and Regional School District 17's  Teacher of the Year -Spanish teacher, Mr. Juan Vazquez-Caballero was recognized along with other teachers of the year from across the state at a special recognition ceremony at CCSU on Thursday, October 29th.  Senor Vazquez also received a plaque for his accomplishment at the COLT (Connecticut Council Of Language Teachers) Conference  on November 2nd. 
 
8.                 Food Drive for Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries - As many of you are aware, the food pantries are particularly low on stock this time of year. A box will be placed outside the main office of the high school during the week of November 16-20 for anyone wishing to make a donation.
 
At this time Shoreline Soup Kitchens and pantries are in need of the following:
 
-         juice
-         healthy snacks such as nuts
-         personal care items (soaps, shampoos, toilet paper, etc)
-         canned fruit
 
OR a check may also be made out to the Shoreline Soup Kitchens    and Pantries.
 
As part of the food drive, Hanna Kelly, a sophomore at HKHS is  organizing a pick up of items from Killingworth residents at their homes on Saturday, November 21st. The volunteers who will be picking up will not enter any homes. Requests are being made for Killingworth residents to leave bags, boxes, or checks in a designated area outside of their home on that day. Anyone wishing to volunteer to assist in pick up is urged to contact Hanna Kelly.
 
Those wishing to have items or checks picked up from their homes on November 21st are asked to contact Hanna at lisamkelly@concast.net by November 18th, with address and location where items will be placed. All pick ups will be confirmed via email on November 20th and 21st.
 
    Please help Hanna stock the Soup Kitchens and Pantries.
 
 
9.                 School Trip to Italy - Liz Young, a school counselor at HKMS is excited to announce that she will leading a School Board approved trip to Italy in April of 2010.  Ms. Young has worked for HK Recreation for the past 8 years as a group fitness instructor and has trained many high school athletes at the annual Aerobics Conditioning in August.
  
Ms. Young is an experienced EF Education Tour Group Leader and is a believer that these educational tours can provide students the opportunity to explore the world around them and open their eyes to a world of possibilities.
 
If you are interested in gaining additional information or having your child participate in this travel opportunity, please attend a parent/student meeting on Monday, November 9th at 7:00 pm in the lower media center of the high school. 10.            Superintendents Award - Katherine Faust and Eric Gambardella
will be recognized at the annual Middlesex Shoreline Superintendents Association luncheon  to be held on November 16th, 2009 beginning 12:00 noon  at the Old Saybrook Point Inn, in Old Saybrook. These annual awards are presented to students who have distinguished themselves from their peers by a demonstrated commitment to community service to others, academic prowess, and leadership service to both community and school.
 
11.            Shoreline Music Festival - Eighteen HKHS students participated in the Shoreline Music Festival on October 7th and 15th. Emily Berman, Tristan Catalano, Andrew Frederick, Rose LaFleur, Sarah MacDonald, Katrina Manzi, Michael O'Neill, Jessica Simms, Adam Stankiewicz, and Kayla Sward performed in the Concert Band. Ari Anderson, Regina Chon, Jesse Eberl, Lauren Flanagan, Alix Jansma, Ryan Klein, Brittany Nugent, and Ryan Spencer were in the Concert Chorus.
 
The two day festival was held at Old Saybrook High School. Band and chorus students from HK, Coginchaug, Cromwell, Old Saybrook, Westbrook, North Branford, Old Lyme, and Hale-Ray worked together under the direction of guest conductors to present a public concert. HK music teachers Tim D'Amato and Marcy Webster escorted HK students to the festival.
 
12.   HK Forensics -News from the HK major Crime Division!   It seems that Barry DeBiasi aka Deebs, has been found dead here at HK.
 
The new forensic science class has been busy locating, bagging, and tagging evidence throughout campus illustrating Locard's Principle and demonstrating Chain of Custody. The mock crime scenes are currently located in the media center, in the computer lab, and in the stairwell at the rear of the cafeteria. These are very simple scenes (no fake blood or gore for now) with an outline of a body surrounded by crime scene tape and loaded with trace evidence.
 
Please note that Mrs. Tooker would welcome speakers with real-life experiences in the field of Forensic Science. Contact her via email if you or someone you know would have an interest in speaking to our forensics class.
 
13.            HKSEPTA -Parents of students receiving special education services can join the paperless communication system of the parent committee HKSEPTA by emailing Rene DiGiacomo at Renee@northsideself-storage.com to join the list. There are some exciting programs being planned for parents this year.
 
14.            Helping Hands Charity Road Race/Walk -HK student Jason Funaro has organized a Boy Scout Eagle Project to support Helping Hands of Killingworth. The project is a two mile road race/walk at Chatfield Hollow State Park on Saturday, November 7th at 10:30 am. Rain date is Sunday, November 8th.  The race fee is 5 food items OR $10.00 to be paid on race day.  Registration is from 9:00 am -10:00 am.  The items most needed are: cereal, oatmeal, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, apple sauce, tuna fish, peanut butter, jelly, and spaghetti sauce.
 
15.            HK Student to Appear on Today Show - HK student Libby Brundage and four other youth curlers have been invited to participate in the United States Olympic Committee celebratory festival to be held at Rockefeller Center, New York City, on Wednesday, November 4th. Libby and the other youth curlers will be presenting caps to the men's and women's Olympic Curling teams.
 
 
 
 
16.     Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling - Mary Drexler, from the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling, made a presentation to the senior class during the advisory period on October 7th.  Mrs. Drexler shared valuable information on how easily teenagers can and do get drawn into gambling situations that can severely impact their physical, social, and financial well being. This is valuable information for our soon-to-be graduates to have as they enter college and the working world.
 
17.            Field Hockey Team and Breast Cancer Awareness - The field hockey team participated in fund raising for the American Cancer Society during October. They sold pink "Playing for the Cure" bracelets and held a bake sale to benefit the fight against breast cancer. They also "Played for the Cure" in their games against Old Saybrook and Stonington by wearing pink game socks, pink hair ribbons, and using a pink ball. The team's goal was to raise $500 for breast cancer.  Along with being caring and compassionate individuals the young ladies showed just how well they can play the game.
 
Congratulations ladies on becoming the 2009 Shoreline   Conference Field Hockey Champions.
 
18.            Human Relations Club - Ms. Allesandrine and 18 members of the Human Relations Club attended a Diversity Conference at Wesleyan University on Tuesday, October 27th.  The film "Shout It Out" had the entire audience rapt. The HK student attendees expressed pleasure over the wonderful day they experienced. Multiple presenters and teacher facilitators shared that the HKHS students were great participants.
 
19.            Sports Leadership Conference - Athletic Director, Dick Dupuis, escorted about 15 student athletes to a Shoreline Leadership Conference at the New Haven Athletics Center at Hillhouse High school on October 15th.  The student athletes, chosen by their coaches, experienced the opportunity to meet with student athletes from other schools to discuss the role and responsibilities of student leaders as well as a variety of issues facing athletes today.
