February 10th and 11th. Please contact Donna
in the main office to set up an appointment.

major content areas: Writing Across the Disciplines, Reading
Across the Disciplines, Mathematics, and

January 30, from 8:00 until 12:15, sophomore students along
with a few junior students attended a CAPT Academy at the high
school to receive reinforcement in Reading and Writing Across
the Disciplines.
This coming Saturday, February 6, another session will
take place to assist students with the science and math
components of the assessment.
4. FROM THE
NURSE:
All 10th
graders must have a physical on file by June 15; this
is mandated by the state of CT, if your child does not have
one, you have received a notice from me so that you have ample
time to obtain one by the end of the year.
Some
students may be missing part of the physical that only a
doctor can complete; there are state requirements that are not
on the sports physical forms. If this is the case,
you will receive a letter from me, please feel free to contact
me with any questions.
Any
9th
grader that has a physical this year after Jan 1 may
use that physical to fulfill the 10th grade
obligation. This would be the only physical they need during
their high school career, unless they participate in school
sports.
Any contact information for me, and all physical and
medication forms are easily obtained on our district website
under "Health Services".
Thank you, Grace Erhart RN
5. CHINESE
VISITORS: Haddam-Killingworth
High School hosted two very special guests on Thursday,
January 28. Our guests were teachers from Shangdong Province,
China, where our Sister School is located. The International
Culture Club organized an informal talk for students and
faculty during Lunch-Activity. The Chinese teachers showed us
pictures of China and students asked many interesting
questions about Chinese culture and current events. We learned
much about our Sister School's culture!
Our
guests visited classrooms, met with administration, a small
group of students, and a few staff members, to gather
information about HKHS. At the end of the day
an agreement was reached to have an art exchange between the
Chinese schools and Haddam-Killingworth High School. I would
like to thank our art department chair, Karen Porter for
spearheading this initiative.

8. Yale "Discovery to Cure" High
School Internship
The
"Discovery to Cure" High School Summer Internship Program
fosters interest in science and research. Students will
complete a six-week research internship working with faculty
and staff in Yale School of Medicine's Department of
Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Sciences. The goal
is to expose high quality students from nearby communities to
Yale's labs and possibly open their minds to future career
opportunities. Of 75 students applying for the opportunity, 15
will be selected after visiting the Department on March
19th and writing an essay on their interest in
pursuing the internship. Five HK juniors will attend this
year.
The
students will be paired with a postdoctoral fellow, graduate
student or laboratory technician who supervises them. They
learn a variety of research techniques in different labs
related to ongoing scientific projects such as PCR, a method
used to amplify genes to as much as 1,000 times their size. In
the past, students have spent the internship extracting
proteins from human tissue, performing animal experiments or
using high-tech machines for cell isolation or protein
quantification. The program culminates with each student
making a presentation on what they learned as part of their
lab experience.
9. Scholastic Art
Awards

the gold key award will have their work submitted as a digital
image to the National Level Scholastic Art Awards Jury. The
Connecticut Celebration was held on January 31, 2010. The

The
issuance of grades on a regular basis serves to promote a
process of continuous evaluation of student performance, to
inform the student, the student's parents and counselor of
his/her progress, and to provide a basis for bringing about
change in student performance, if such change seems necessary
(BOE 5121). Report cards will be sent home by
mail. Interim reports will be posted on Classroll and
will not be sent by mail unless a specific request is made by
a parent to the guidance department.
