PARENT
SURVEY
In an effort to continue working to improve the
learning environment and services available to your children,
I am seeking your input. I wish to hear from you about how you
believe we are performing in a number of areas including, but
not limited to: school climate, safety, expectations,
communication, and services.
Below, I have attached a link to an on-line
parent survey that should take about 10 minutes to
complete. My hope
is that you can take a few minutes of your time to share your
thoughts with me. Naturally, the more people that respond, the
more meaningful the data becomes.
As of today, I have received 102 responses. The
survey will remain available on line through Monday, June 7,
2010.

in two of Ms. Allesandrine's English classes recently welcomed
Mr. Macunas as a guest speaker on the subject of Hiroshima
during World War II. Mr. Macunas delivered an
interactive, multi-media presentation to complement students'
recent reading of John Hersey's nonfiction book
Hiroshima, which chronicles the lives of six people who
survived the atomic bombing in 1945. Students report
that they learned a great deal from the presentation including
information about bat bombs, the pilot of the Enola
Gay, and causes & effects of the atomic bomb.
CLASS OF 2011
NEWS
The Class
of 2011 just held a successful junior prom at the Branford
House (the mansion at UConn, Avery Point.) Thank you to all the
parents who helped out.
We appreciate your donations of food, time,
organization, and transportation. The class will close
out this year with a bake sale on Thursday, June 3. Students should bring
in their donations of baked goods, snacks, water, and juice to
C210. As we head
into senior year, one event is already planned. Please mark your
family's calendar for senior prom on Saturday, June 4,
2011. The prom
will be held at Water's Edge in Westbrook.
BRIT
LIT
For two
Mondays in May, Mrs. Miles' British Literature classes enjoyed
stepping back into the distant past. Students enjoyed the
first Monday at the New England Renaissance
Faire as
they celebrated the first annual Robin Hood Festival. Eating
drumsticks, viewing jousts, and witnessing demonstrations of
falconry were only a few of the unique opportunities available
to HK students.
The following Monday, students once again dressed as
kings, ladies, monks, and fools to attend the annual spring
event at Saint Clements Castle. The students spent a wonderful
day interacting with first graders from Portland's Valley View
School, and participating in the various planned activities of
the day.
ENVIRONTHON
The Envirothon teams won awards at the event on
May 20th, at Deer Lake in Killingworth. The
freshman team finished 9th and the AP Environmental
Science team finished 5th. They have a framed
certificate and a plaque for those finishes. The AP team
also tied for the Aquatics high score, which gives them
another plaque.

witnessed a mock car crash last week as a reminder to the
tragedy that can occur when discretion and good decision

during prom season. A special thank you to our SADD
organization, the Connecticut State Police, and all of our
emergency responders who so willing devote their valuable time
and effort to keep our students safe.
LEO
CLUB
The Lions Club in Killingworth is forming a
student-based community service group called the Leo

Leone, school counselor, is the faculty HKHS contact. Recruitment will begin
this September at the high school.
By way of background, Leo clubs were formed by
Lions Clubs International to provide youth with an opportunity
