International Travel
Opportunities
"2012 holds the possibility
of 3 international travel opportunities for students at H-K!
Students had the opportunity to travel to Italy this last
April, and 25 others will be participating in a trip to
England, Ireland, Wales and France in February, 2011! If you
missed out on these travel opportunities, or if you would like
to learn about another fascinating part of our world through
hands-on, experiential educational travel, you'll be pleased
to know that 3 international travel opportunities are in the
planning stages for 2012, pending Board of Education approval.
These travel opportunities include a tour to Costa Rica in
February, 2012 with science educator, Mrs. Ferrer, a tour to
Italy and Greece in April, 2012 with Mr. Regan, and a trip to
France for French language students with Mrs. Kehrley in
April, 2012. If you are interested in more information, please
contact a tour group leader today. Act quickly, as travel
incentives including $200 off tours to Costa Rica and
Italy/Greece expire on December 15th."

Cap and Gown
University Cap and Gown was
here on Tuesday, November 30 to measure the senior class for
caps/gowns. Those students who were absent were given a
form to fill out in homeroom; please remind your child to
return the form. The cost of the cap/gown is $16.50,
cash or check (made out to University Cap & Gown) and both
the form and payment should be turned in to Melissa Bennett in
the main office. Also, a number of students were measured on
November 30, but did not have payment; please have your child
turn in their payment to Melissa Bennett.
Co-Curricular
Fair
The high school held its
first annual Co-Curricular Fair this past month. Each
club and sport was represented by student members who
encouraged freshman and sophomore students to get
involved. We received a tremendous amount of positive
feedback from teachers and students, who signed up for clubs
in unprecedented numbers. Most exciting was seeing how
proud students were to represent their clubs and how kind and
welcoming they were to students who showed interest in
joining. We look forward to making the fair an even more
celebratory event next year.
Student
Council
The student council had a very
successful blood drive last month taking in 51 pints with some
help from parent drop ins. Our next drive is on March
18th. If you are interested in giving please
contact Mr. Cavrell at 860-345-8541, X196. We also had a very
successful homecoming dance with over 280 students attending.
Any student is welcome to join student council and be a part
of the voice of the school.
Students Meet Christopher Dodd at
Chamber Breakfast
HK history students met with Senator
Dodd at the Middlesex Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting
this past month. Students enjoyed a full breakfast while
hearing the senator speak. Afterwards, they had a brief
meet and greet where they were able to speak with Senator
Dodd.

Teacher Accepted into NASA Study

teachers in current research. The NITARP program
partners teachers with scientists with the ultimate goal of
encouraging student interest in science, technology,
engineering and math. While in the program, teachers
conduct research (sometimes presented and/or published) using
data from the Spitzer Space Telescope and archival databases
such as the NED, NStED, and IRSA (funded by NASA).
HKTV
2010 Holiday Show Pledge Form
,
This year the Haddam-Killingworth High School
Communications Department Holiday Show will benefit research
to cure a local 4 year old girl named Finley who has
a rare disease that is deteriorating her eyesight. Finley
is slowly losing sight and will be completely blind by her
early teens, but with your help, research can be conducted to
find a cure for Finley's strand of Lebers Congenital
Amaurosis.
All of the money donated to the Holiday Show
will fund research to help find a cure for Finley and the 5
other children that have her strand of LCA before they become
completely blind. The hope of Finley's family, doctors, and
supporters is that the money needed will be raised in order
for the research to begin. Finley has a strong chance at
getting to keep the impaired eyesight that she has now rather
than going blind.
As a token of generosity during this holiday
season, we are hoping that you will make a donation. Remember
that every dollar counts.
For each pledge of $25 or more, the
donor will be entered in a number of random raffles to
win dinner gift certificates and other great prizes such as
theater tickets. Even
if you can not give $25, each donation is greatly appreciated
and tax deductible.
Be
sure to watch the show live on Comcast Channel 18 or on the
world wide web at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/vsen18 on
December 23rd Live from 9:00 AM to 12:oo pm.
Holiday Show encore presentations will be aired every evening
at 7pm through January 3rd. You
can call in your pledge during the show to
860-345-0690.
Thank you very much for supporting the 22nd annual HKTV
