PARENT
BULLETIN |
Issue 1 September 2, 2008,
Good morning. I am initiating a
parent bulletin that I intend to email to you at
frequent intervals in order to help keep you informed of
events happening at the high school. I hope you find
this communication useful. 1. The
high school had a very smooth opening and students were
introduced to new staff members during an assembly
program on Wednesday, August 28th. New faces
include: Mr. Phil Holtz (physics teacher), Ms. Shefali
Mehta (Exploring Science teacher), Ms. Janet Kohm
(teacher of Child Development), Mrs. Erin Grant
(Spanish teacher), Ms. Grace Erhart (school nurse), Mr.
Rick Baxley ( substitute teacher), and Ms. Jo-Ann
Anderson (high school secretary). 2. At the
conclusion of the assembly program the entire school ran
an evacuation drill and moved everyone outside to
designated places on the football field. 3. A
follow-up assembly program was held with the freshmen
class to fully explain behavioral expectations at the
high school. 4. Administration and teachers
shared information with students related to the
District's Drug and Alcohol Policy, the Dress Code, and
the proper care of the desk top and lap top
computers. It might be beneficial to review these
policies (found in the handbook) with your child. The
Drug and Alcohol Policy is found on pages 8 and 9 while
the Dress Code is on pages 12 and 13. Students
have been asked by our Associate Principal, Mrs.
Priscilla Luoma, NOT to wear flip flops as they can be a
safety issue especially in situations where we are
required to exit the building in a timely
manner. 5. The technology age has resulted in a
large number of students carrying cell phones and ipods.
Students are not to have the cell phones turned on
during regular school hours as the "texting" and calls
are disruptive. Should you have to get a message to your
child while school is in session, we ask that you do so
through the high school office (345-8541) as opposed to
making calls directly to them during instructional
time. 6. Open House is scheduled for
Thursday, September 11th at 7:00 pm. It is a great
opportunity to meet those here at the high school who
will be working with your child. You may also sign up
for teacher conferences at that time. 7.
Teacher Conferences dates are scheduled for October 14th
and 15th. 8. Homework is an important part of
your child's grade. Please help reinforce that message
they are receiving at school. Research shows that
students who are involved in high school activities out
perform their counterparts who are not. I encourage your
child to join one or more of the numerous athletic and
non-athletic teams and clubs that we offer at
Haddam-Killingworth High School. 9.
Underclassmen will get pictures taken on September
11th. 10. Guidance will host a Senior Parents'
Night on September 15th.. Your guidance Contact is Mrs.
Maryann Grimaldi, Head of our Guidance
department. 11. As of Friday, August 29th, 149
seniors have already applied for and received their
senior parking privileges. At this point in time
it appears that we will only be able to accommodate
parking for members of the senior class. Should this
change, Mrs. Priscilla Luoma, Associate Principal, will
make an announcement to the student
body.
Sincerely,
Charlie Macunas Principal,
HKHS
