PARENT
BULLETIN |
Issue 4 September 24,
2008
1.
Please remember to return your Project Graduation
wrapping paper orders to the high school office. The
last day to submit orders is Friday, September 26th. All
money raised goes to provide our graduating class with a
safe and fun-filled post-graduation party. Please
support our seniors and the hard working parents of
Project Graduation.
2. The first semester
progress report period ends September 30th.
Parents are encouraged to sign onto www.classroll.com to
view their child's progress reports since progress
reports will not be sent home. If you would like
to get in touch with your child's teacher or teachers
you may email them at www.rsd17.org.
3. Remember to circle October
14th and 15th on your calendars for parent conferences.
4. The first
Student Council sponsored dance is scheduled for
Saturday, October 18, 2008. The dance runs from 7:00 pm
until 10:00 pm. If you wish to chaperone one of our
dances please conduct our Student Council Advisor, Mr.
Carl Cavrell at the high school.
5. Professor and
Associate Dean of the Tagilatela College of Engineering,
Ali Montazer, spoke with the Intro to Calculus, AP
Calculus, and Introduction to Engineering classes on
Tuesday, September 16th. Professor Montazer presented
information regarding job opportunities and starting
salaries in the field of engineering. He also provided
several examples of problems encountered and solved by
engineers. In addition, he encouraged any interested
students to visit the University of New Haven on Fridays
when they have special visitation days.
6. I met with three
officers of the National Honor Society this week who
their thoughtful and ambitious agenda for the school
year. September 30th through October 2nd they will
sponsor a Ping-Pong Tournament to benefit Locks of Love,
a public non-profit organization that provides
hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children who
have suffered hair loss from severe medical
conditions. Other activities include a Food Drive,
a Toy Drive, a Cookie Dough Fundraiser where proceeds
will be used to create a scholarship for a current
senior, a Clothing Drive, Daffodil Days for the American
Cancer Society, and numerous other
undertakings.
These student generated activities
are a prime example of how considerate, compassionate,
and caring the students of HK are. As parents, you
have every right to be proud of the young men and women
you are raising. 7.
Haddam-Killingworth High School, in cooperation with the
Middlesex Consortium is currently in the process of
improving and implementing its school-to-career
activities within its career guidance program. These
activities help students connect their learning and
knowledge to the business world. Participation in
school-to-career activities such as career fairs, job
shadowing, internships, and even summer employment
affords students important opportunities to gain
valuable experience and information concerning career
choices as they formulate their college or employment
plans. As parents you can assist us by being a
resource and volunteer for these school-to-career
activities. In agreeing to participate, your name will
be placed on the Consortium database which will allow us
to contact you for possible assistance with these
activities. If you, or someone you know or work with,
would be willing to help in these efforts, it would be
greatly appreciated. To volunteer, please email me at
cmacunas@rsd17.org with information requested
