PARENT
BULLETIN |
Parent Bulletin #5 October 1,
2008 1. The guidance
department has been busy arranging college rep
visitations to HK to speak with our students. In the
month of September alone, representatives from 30
different colleges and universities will have traveled
here to talk about their programs of study. A complete
listings of schools that have made or will be making
presentations can be found on the Guidance link of the
high school web site.
2. If your child is
taking a math course from Algebra 2 on up, a calculator
might be a wise purchase. Many students are coming to
class without a calculator and while the department will
lend them as needed, sometimes students are not as
comfortable with its use if the calculator is not the
same make and model each time. The department
suggests a scientific or graphing calculator. The
Texas instrument T183, 83+, 84, or 89(for calculus
students) are all good graphing calculators. A
member of the department found a good price on
scientific
calculators at:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00000JBNX/ref=nosim/13459879-20.
3. Mrs. Kamercia and
her field hockey team wrote and signed a wonderful
letter to Mike Distefano, our Director of Buildings and
Grounds. The letter acknowledges the terrific job his
field maintenance team in conjunction with field
consultant Bob Law did on placing sod and preparing the
field for competition. Last season our filed hockey team
was not able to host a state tournament game because the
field did not meet new state qualifications. The recent
placing of the sod over part of the clay area of the
baseball infield now means we are capable of playing
state games on our own campus. When baseball
season arrives, the sod will be removed and used to
patch holes on other fields around the
complex.
4. Hazardous Waste
Collection: Mrs. Ferrer and her environmental science
students have volunteered to spread the word for the
collection of environmental waste. Residents considered
to be part of the Estuary Region, and this includes
Haddam and Killingworth, can get rid hazardous materials
at no cost. The facility is located on Dump Road, in
Essex (route 9, exit 4). Collection days are on
October 11, October 25, and November 1. The collection
station is open from 9:00am to 1 pm. Electronic
collection day is November 8. For additional details go
to the facility web page
http://www.crerpa.org/wastemanagement.php
5. Ten HKHS students will
attend an October 14th Middlesex County Chamber of
Commerce breakfast at the Crowne Plaza in Cromwell, CT.
The breakfast will begin around 7:30am and end by 9:00
am. Jim Calhoun, head basketball coach at UCONN,
will be the main speaker.
6. Reminder:

weeks-October 14th and 15th.
7. Student progress
reports are now available for you to access on
classroll.
8. All sophomores and
juniors need to register for the PSAT by October 7thand
pick up their study guide in guidance. The more they
practice for SATs the better prepared they will be.
Please call your child's counselor if you have any
questions or need a registration form.
9. Juniors should pay
their class dues of $45 by October 31st. After October
31st, dues increase to $50. All dues must be paid
in full for the first three years in order to purchase
prom tickets in the spring. Please contact Mrs.
Marcy Webster- class advisor if the dues are an issue
for you.
10. The field hockey team
will be dedicating 2 of their games during the month of
October to the fight against breast cancer. They
will "Play 4 the Cure" on October 3rd against
Valley Regional and then again on Monday, Oct. 27th
against Stonington. The players will be wearing
pink socks, pink bracelets, and pink ribbons in their
hair. The team will also be sponsoring 2 bake
sales in October with all proceeds going to fight breast
cancer. Any donations for the fight against breast
cancer will be accepted. All checks are payable
to: Play for the Cure and sent to Coach Kamercia at the
high school.
11. The National Honor
Society is holding its annual food drive Monday, October
6-10. Anyone who brings in 10 or more cans you will
receive a candy bar. The 15 people who bring in the most
cans will be awarded a pizza party. The cans and other
non-perishable food items will be donated to two local
food banks: the Killingworth Helping Hands Caring Hearts
