PARENT BULLETIN
Issue 6
October 7,
2008 |
| 1. In last week's
bulletin I made reference to math students and the need
for them to have calculators. The math department feels
that it would be beneficial for ALL math students to
have their calculators. Students enrolled in courses up
to algebra 2 should have at least a scientific
calculator and those in algebra 2 and higher might want
to consider upgrading to a graphing calculator. The
department does have calculators they lend out to
students but it is sometimes cumbersome for students if
they borrow calculators that are of different
brands.
2. This week is the
National Honor Society Food Drive to help support our
local food pantries. This year the need is greater than
ever and the NHS has set an ambitious goal of 10,000
items. The drive will extend through next
Wednesday, October 15th.
3. Project Graduation,
the wonderful group of parents who are planning a drug
and alcohol free post graduation celebration for the
Class of 2009, have a planning meeting on Tuesday,
October 14th at 7:00 in the lower media center of the
high school. Please feel free to join this group of
thoughtful and ambitious folks as they move forward. The
committee is still in need of a Chair (or Co-chairs) of
the food committee. If you, or you and a friend would
consider this position, please contact Kaycee Blancaflor
at kccallahan@uks.com. , However, even if you do
not feel able to Chair or Co-Chair a committee, you
assistance will be greatly appreciated.
4.. On Friday, October
3rd, Mr. Chuck Lewis who runs and operates our TV studio
received the Media Directors Award from the State
Association of Youth and Family Services. Chuck
was nominated by Cheryl Chandler, the Director of Youth
and Family services for Haddam and Killingworth (HKYFS).
Chuck was recognized for his extensive work with the
youths of the community as well as his ability to offer
programming to the Shoreline communities at large.
Cheryl herself was the worthy recipient of the Youth
Services Director of the Year. We are
fortunate to have such caring individuals working with
our children.
5. Two
Haddam-Killingworth High School teachers will be serving
on a NEASC (New England Association of Schools and
Colleges) site visit accreditation team. Their
experience will be a big benefit to HKHS as we begin a
self-study process and look forward to our own site
visit in 2010.
6.. Parent conferences
are next week-October 14th and 15th. You may call the
high school office (345-8541) if you still wish to
schedule and appointment. Students will have early
dismissal on both days.
7. . No school on
Monday, October 13th for Columbus Day.
8. I will soon be
sending out an issue of Paw Prints-a school publication
that originates from this office. Included will be
individual, class, and team accomplishments along with
student photos. In that issue, I will share that in the
future, in an effort to cut back on postage, that Paw
Prints will only appear on our web page under
publications -UNLESS I specifically hear from
individuals that they would like to receive a hard copy.
All Parent Bulletins are also archived on the high
school web page.
9. A number of students
have or will soon take some very interesting field
trips. Some of our sophomore English students who have
been studying Julius Caesar will see the play at the
Ivoryton Playhouse on October 16th. Others will be
performing in the Shoreline Music Festival on the same
day. Twenty-one students enrolled in our Child
Development class visited Middlesex Hospital on October
6th to view the perinatal, labor and delivery, birthing
and postpartum areas. They were also made aware of
educational services available to expectant women and
their families as well as new parents and their
children.
10. The National Honor
Society at Haddam-Killingworth High School sponsored its
third annual Ping Pong Tournament from September
30--October 2. Proceeds this year will benefit
Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that provides
hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children
suffering from long-term medical hair loss. The
tournament was held during lunch over three days and
generated enthusiastic crowds. The 32 students and
faculty members who competed made a donation to the
charity in order to play. The winner of the 2008
tournament is Spanish teacher, Juan Jose
Vazquez-Caballero, who took home the title for the third
consecutive year. Thank you to all who
participated and supported this annual event. The
event earned slightly over $100.
Sincerely,
Charlie Macunas Principal,
HKHS
