Students in Ms. Allesandrine's English 12 class welcomed
a guest speaker following their reading of Anna
Quindlen's novel Black and Blue. Liz Sequenzia, a child
advocate from the New Horizons shelter in Middletown, shared
facts about dating and domestic violence, and helped
illuminate the troubled dynamics of the family in the
novel. The students learned about a typical day at
work for a child advocate, and they also participated in
role-playing the experiences of people seeking help in abusive
situations.
18. As part of a unit on contemporary
Haitian literature, students in Ms. Allesandrine's English 12
Honors class welcomed H-KHS teacher John Todzia and two of his
friends, Louis Merosne and Brother DeLord, both from
Haiti. Mr. Todzia has visited Haiti many times to help
build schools and participate in other on-going relief
efforts. Students learned about Haitian history and
culture, and saw several photos of present-day
Haiti. A highlight of the visit was the conga drum
playing by Brother DeLord, who shared four traditional rhythms
with the class.
19.
Mr. Todzia's woodshop students were treated to a log cutting
demonstration on a portable saw mill. Mr. Tom Worthley set up
his mill outside the woodshop and demonstrated the techniques
in milling cherry logs into usable boards.
