                                                      Announcements

1.   Final exams are taking place Tuesday and Wednesday, January 20th and 21st.   Exams periods on Tuesday are for periods C and A.  Exams for periods D and B will take place on Wednesday. The first exam each day will begin at 7:25 and end at 9:35. Second exam each day is from 9:50-11:50.  Students are to report to their exam periods where attendance will be taken.  Students will not be dismissed from the exam until the end of the exam period. If students do not have an exam during a particular period, they should report to the assigned teacher for a quiet study. Seniors carrying average of 93 or better in a particular class, may, at the discretion of the teacher, be excused from that exam.  Buses will leave HKHS at 11:56 to transport students home.

2.   This year's Holiday Show was another huge success. So far the show has raised over $14,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  Ten students representing ten different high schools contested for the title of Shoreline Idol. Dane Paracuelles, the HK representative, is the lone male in the contest. The winner will receive a $1000 scholarship from Lenny and Joe's Fish Tale and a one hour recording session at the Riverway studio in East Haddam. I would like to thank all those businesses and individuals who worked on or contributed to the success of the show.  The finals of Shoreline Idol will take place on January 23rd at Haddam-Killingworth High School. Host of the show will be Jon "Cadillac' Seville from radio station WDRC-FM.  Admission to the event will be a non-perishable food item to benefit the Shoreline Soup Kitchens.

3.   Our Jazz Band and Chamber Choir will travel to the Berklee School of Music in Boston on January 31st to compete in the annual Jazz Festival. Both groups are sounding exceptional.

4.   The 10th grade advisees had a guest speaker on Tuesday, Liz Sequenzia from Planned Parenthood in Middletown to speak on the topic of dating and relationships. I hope to have another guest speaker on April 28th to address the issue of new teen driving regulations.

5.   On Tuesday and Wednesday the high school hosted Mr. Shi Zhaohai, Mr. Liu Zhixiao, and Ms. Fengying Yuan, three visiting principals from Shandong Province, China. The visitors spent two full days touring the facilities, visiting classes and groups such as the International Culture Club, and gathering information on our educational programs and procedures. The guests were very impressed by all the programs HK has to offer, especially in terms of "hands-on" courses. They were equally impressed by the wonderful behavior of our students and what they termed as the "love and care" they could feel in the building.

On Friday, Mr. Shi, Headmaster of Liaocheng, Water-city Middle School (which services high school students), and I entered into a partnership agreement.

The partnership principles are:
have a close association between both sides
work for a better understanding between both sides
reinforce the friendship between both sides
achieve educational development of both sides

The activities of the Partner School Program are to:
A.    Inform each other in a timely manner to state the significant activities of both schools as well as exchanging the works of teachers and students from both sides through mail or e-mail.
B.     Provide students and teachers from both schools with opportunities to exchange correspondence and get to know one another by post or e-mail.
C.     Explore future opportunities for students to visit the partner schools during holidays and offer students from both sides an opportunity to exchange information and to get a better cultural understanding.
D.    Carry out a long term teacher-and-student learning program. Both schools can select students and teachers to participate with the partner school for Chinese or English learning, at the same time learning from the culture of the other country.

I would like to personally thank Isabelle Chen and Eugenia Huang for serving as translators while our visitors were here. A special thank you also goes out to Mr. Ernie Nagler for all his work in helping to orchestrate the exchange.

6.   A beautiful new Basketball Scorers Table should arrive at the school this week, thanks to the thoughtful generosity of the boys' basketball parents. The new table will be padded and sport the Cougar logo and high school name. Please come to cheer our girls and boys team on and "check-out" the new addition to the field house. UPDATE: In my latest bulletin I had thanked the boys basketball parents for purchasing the new scorers table for the field house, I was informed yesterday that parents of the girls team also participated in this purchase. I would very much like to thank both sets of parents for your kindness and generosity.

7.   If you attend our basketball games you are no doubt impressed by the support coming from our student section-the Cougar Den. A plaque has been placed on the wall of the field house to honor the two founders of The Den - Jay Barbuto and Kevin Peterson.

8.   Shortly, 85 of our seniors will take the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP).  The test is the only nationally representative and continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do in various subject areas. Assessments are conducted periodically in mathematics, reading, science, writing, the arts, civics, economics, geography, and U.S. history. Students were selected randomly by the government to participate in this test. Any student who takes the test will be entered in a raffle for a $50 gift card and the chance to win the right to one of the administrative parking places for one week.

9.   PARENTS of 10th GRADERS:  All 10th graders must have a completed physical exam this year. It is a state mandated requirement for continued attendance in school. Please contact our school nurse, Ms. Grace Erhart at the clinic (ext 344) if you have any questions.
HKHS Project Graduation's committee will meet on the second Tuesday of each month. The next two meetings will be at 7:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium on February 10th and March 10th. The committee would like to welcome Joan Cizek and Stacey Grimaldi as the new Food Committee Chairs. Please contact Stacey at ssgrimaldi@comcast.net if you are able to volunteer time to pick up or deliver food the night of project graduation. Project Graduation is also looking for a person or persons to chair the Fund Raising committee for next year after the retirement of two dedicated and hard-working women, Lisa Weise and Cathy Cavanaugh. Please contact Kaycee Blancaflor at kccallahan@uks.com to offer assistance.

10.   The child development class went to Burr Elementary School on January 14th to observe the elementary students at work and play.

11.   The 2009 Relay for Life of HK planning Team would like to invite you to the 3rd Annual relay Kickoff Celebration on January 22nd at 6:30 in the high school auditorium.

12.   GRAD Up-date.  Adam Sousa, a graduate of the Class of 2000 recently made his Broadway conducting debut. He is currently conducting WICKED on Broadway and will soon go on national tour.

13.   The World Languages Department will be have its world languages iPod lab set up and running.

14.   All students will have an opportunity to win either a $50 or $25 gift card for submitting the best mnemonic (memory device) to help our students learn our Expectations for Student Learning. The expectations are

·         Access and analyze information
·         Problem solve
·         Communicate effectively
·         Apply information
·         Reflect and evaluate
·         Act responsibly
·         Pursue goals

Students should use the first letter of the first word of each expectation to form a word and create a memorable sentence to help individuals remember the expectations. An example of a mnemonic is: Mother very earnestly made jelly sandwiches under no protest. By using the first letter of each word in the sentence one might be able to identify the planets in the order from the sun (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto).   Deadline for submitting the Expectations Mnemonic is February 6th. Entry forms can be picked up in the high school office.
