Parent Bulletin 6                                      HKMS                                                      February 14, 2008

1.      Thank you to our parents who attended our night meetings this week to provide vital feedback for our school community. If you were not able to join us and you have comments about what is working or what is not working for you or your child, send me an email at  mwagner@rsd17.org.  We will also be sending out a survey to all parents the first week of March and asking our students to complete a survey on line.  When all of the data has been collected, we will work with together as a team to develop an action plan to address the concerns raised. Thank you for participating in this process.

2.      A frequently expressed concern is the need for timely, predictable methods of communication.  To help immediately in this area, I will send out my weekly bulletins every Thursday school is in session so you have the information before the weekend.  If you do not get the direct email, the bulletin will be posted on the website by Friday morning.  I will be mailing home a flyer – “Get Connected Initiative” over the winter break detailing how to stay connected to your school!

3.      We have extended Yearbook Sales one more week (February 25 – February 29)  If you wish to buy your child a yearbook, please send in the form and a check for $25.00 made out to HKMS Student Activity.  Blank order forms are available in the main office.

4.      The district is closed next Monday in observance of Presidents Day.  There is no school for students, but the main office will be staffed from 7 AM to 3 PM, Monday through Friday.

5.      Congratulations to our Patriot’s Pen Contest winners who were honored last weekend at the Haddam Firehouse at a banquet hosted by the VFW and the Ladies Auxiliary.  Congratulations to Mason Rice our first place winner and our runners up, Rachel Roberts and Sarah Goldsmith. These 8th grade students were joined by Team 8-2 Leader, Betty Devlin.

6.      We missed our Tuesday CMT academy (Reading) this week due to winter weather.  We have rescheduled that lost session for Monday, February 25.

7.      Our Pasta Dinner is scheduled for February 29 (Sadie Hawkins Day) in our cafeteria from 6 pm to 8 pm.  Each 8th grade homeroom is donating a basket which will be raffled.  The funds raised that evening through dinner tickets and basket sales will be used to reduce the cost of the Washington, DC trip for all 8th grade students.  The final bills sent home the first week in March will reflect this savings. Scholarship funding will be supported by donations from the Lions Club, PTO, Student Council and Honor Society.

8.      Pre-adolescents have trouble keeping track of all of their belongings!    If your child is missing his favorite coat or her best hoodie, chances are it has ended up in our lost and found collection located at the bottom of the stairs in our cafeteria.  Every six weeks, we turn the clothing over to the local visiting nurse association who wash the clothing and give it to families in need.  So please check out the lost and found before your child’s clothing is recycled.

9.      Changes in winter season clubs are bold faced and red.
