Parent Bulletin 4                                        HKMS                                                      January 30, 2008

1.      IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR GRADE 8 Parents:  The HKHS Guidance Department is hosting an informational meeting for the parents of incoming high school freshmen (current grade 8) next Monday, February 4 at the HKHS Auditorium. Course registration materials will be handed out to our 8th graders next week.

2.      I am saddened to report that we had a medical emergency at the middle school on Tuesday, January 29.  A respected substitute, Mr. David Sadowsky, collapsed in the main hallway lobby after school was dismissed.  He received immediate, expert care from our school nurse and staff members.  We are grateful for the quick response of the emergency medical volunteers from our town and they transported Mr. Sadowsky to Middlesex Hospital. Unfortunately, Mr. Sadowsky passed later that afternoon.

The majority of our students were loaded on their busses when this emergency occurred; however, some students staying after school or waiting for the last bus to arrive did witness the flurry of emergency activity.  I addressed the students this morning on our TV news show, providing a brief summary of the basic facts to quell any rumors.  Your child may have questions for you tonight.  If you have any concerns or wish to refer your child to one of our counselors, please contact the guidance department at 663 – 1797.

3.      The February PTO meeting has been moved from February 14 to February 7 so there are no conflicts with Valentine’s Day.  Therefore, I have moved the parent meeting to discuss Honor Roll to February 7 at 6:30 PM.

4.      Congratulations to our school wide winner of the spelling bee, Carter Sullivan, grade 7.  It was a neck and neck competition for the last 8 rounds between Carter and Lucas Hannen,  also a 7th grade student.   Carter will be representing our school at the state competition in New Haven later in March.

5.      Parent Conferences are scheduled for next Wednesday (2/6) and Thursday (2/7) by appointment.  This means that our students will have early dismissals both days.  For further information, you can reach your child’s guidance counselor at 663-1797.

6.      Don’t forget to stop by our PTO Book Fair next week in our school library media center. The fair will be staffed from 8 to 2:30 on Monday and 8:00 to 4:30 on Tuesday through Thursday.

7.      We have a busy weekend for our students:

·         There will be a Lion’s Club KNO dance this Friday night from 7 to 10 PM for our seventh and eighth grade students in our school cafeteria.

·         The Math Counts Regional competition will be held Saturday at the Coast Guard Academy.  We wish our math team good luck in the challenges and trials of the day.

8.      You are not imagining things if you see Mr. Tom Grasso, grade 8 special education teacher, in our building.  His military training, scheduled for February and March, has been deferred to April and May.  We are very happy that he is able to stay with our students through the critical time of CMT testing.

9.      A unique opportunity for students interested in Hip Hop dancing:  The HK recreation department is offering a Hip Hop class after school  here on Mondays (Grades 5 and 6) and Thursdays (Grades 7 and 8) from 3:00 – 3:45 PM.  Ms. Lindsey from Caffery’s Dance School will be the instructor.  For more information or to register call the Recreation Department at 345-8334.

10.  Speaking of CMT’s:  we will be posting the CMT schedule within the week.  However, for planning purposes as you consider vacations and doctor’s appointments, please avoid any planned absences for your child from March 3 through March 20th as that is the state testing. Make- up exams can be scheduled, but that will require your child to miss his/her regularly scheduled classes.

11.  I am frequently asked:  what is a town meeting?  Several of our new staff wondered if they were going to meet town officials at our first meeting in September!  No – we are not holding political meetings each month but rather giving our students an opportunity to showcase their talents, provide recognition and learn about different programs and school rules.  Each month, usually on the last Friday, we hold a 7th /8th grade and a 5th /6th  grade assembly to celebrate the wonders of our middle school students.  Our January meeting will be held tomorrow – make sure you ask your child what we celebrated!

12.  An important clarification from last week’s bulletin!   The traffic guards in front of the middle school entrance are NOT school district employees.  They are provided by the town of Killingworth
