Parent Bulletin 14
May 2, 2008
1.
As I write this week's notice, our
eighth grade students are traveling back from a whirl wind
tour of Washington, DC.
We expect them to arrive back at the school by 9:30 PM
- but students will call once they have crossed into the state
of Connecticut later this evening. In my phone
conversations with our staff in DC over the past two days, I
have heard nothing but raves about the behavior of our
children. I am so
very proud of all of them and so happy that we were able to
provide this experience.
I also wanted to take the opportunity to thank our 21
staff chaperones who spent the past three days on duty to
provide this once in a lifetime experience for our students.
Many of our staff have young families and left their own
families to take care of our school children! Matt
Espinosa who organized the trip throughout this year deserves
a huge round of applause for all of the leg work required to
make this trip a reality. I am so appreciative of
everyone's efforts.
2.
Tonight, the Killingworth Lions Club has invited
grade 6 to the monthly KNO Dance. As grade 8 will not be
back from Washington, DC, our sixth and seventh grade students
will be able to rock the night away. Held in our middle
school cafeteria, the dance begins at 7 PM and ends at 10
PM. The fee is
$5.00 per student.
3.
The parent and van drop off area in front of the
school has been recently lined. Parents are requested
to pull along the curb to drop off their children at the
sidewalk.
Please do not park perpendicular to the
curb.
If you need to park and enter the building, pull into
one of the designated parking spaces and use the cross
walk.
4.
We have begun the transition process for
preparing our fourth graders and their parents for the move to
fifth grade and the middle school program. There will be evening
orientation sessions and buidling tours this month on
Wednesday, May 7; Monday, May 12; or Thursday, May 21. I will also be
visiting every fourth grade class during the last two weeks of
May. Fourth grade
classes will visit the MS for one morning in early
June. Finally, we
will be offering a "Step Up" camp in late August for
4th graders prior the first day of school. Details are listed in
a flyer that will be sent home with fourth grade
students.
5.
Our spring concert season is upon
us. We begin with
the fifth and sixth grade band concert next Thursday evening
(May 8) at 7 PM.
The seventh/eighth grade band concert follows the
following week on Wednesday, May 14. Several parents have
contacted us about a conflict with the elementary art shows
for this event.
Unfortunately, we cannot move the concert due to
conflicts with other events later this month.
6.
Our May PTO meeting has been rescheduled for
Thursday, May 15 due to the conflict on May 8 with our
band concert.
7.
Friday, June 13th is the 8th grade
graduation ceremony and dance. It has been a long
standing tradition at HKMS that the 7th grade families sponsor
this evening. The PTO organizers are in need of the
following food items: boxes of crackers, cubed cheese,
vegetable platters with dip, fruit platters with dip, nut-free
dessert items (brownies, cookies, cupcakes, squares). If
you are able to donate any of the above, please e-mail Laura
Roman at landdroman@aol.com
(Please note "8th grade night" in the subject line).
Details concerning drop off will be provided later.
Reminders will be sent out in June. Thanks for all of
your anticipated
help!
8.
Our fifth grade is preparing for a grade level field
trip to Sturbridge Village on Monday, May 12. Permission slips are
due back to your child's homeroom teacher.
