Parent Bulletin                                             HKMS                                                        January 8, 2008

Greetings for 2008.  One of my resolutions for 2008 is to send you weekly news bulletins in an email format that will be posted on our web site as well.  It is my hope that I can keep you abreast of all of the happenings at our school:

1.       Report cards were sent home with students on December 19.  If you haven’t sent your signed envelope back, please do so as we will need them at the end of the second trimester.  If you haven’t seen your child’s report card at all – call guidance.   Honor roll will be posted in the guidance office and on our web site by this Wednesday.

2.       We have our band concerts scheduled for this week.  On Wednesday night (1/9) our grade 5 and 6 will perform and on Thursday (1/10)  our grades 7 and 8 students will perform.  Both concerts start at 7 PM in our auditorium. Student dress for our musicians is a white dress shirt and black pants or skirt.

3.       Due to the band concert on Thursday evening, this week’s scheduled PTO meeting has been rescheduled for next Thursday 1/17.

4.       We have had several staffing changes over the winter break:

·         We are pleased to welcome Margaret Bernier who is the special education teacher for the Learning Center during Linda Sturm-Ribeiro’s maternity leave.  We are very fortunate to have Mrs. Bernier who comes with a wealth of experience.

·         Mr. Joe Corso, one of our PE teachers was deployed to active duty for the Army.  He will be stationed in New Jersey as an instructor for the next twelve months.  We have begun the interview process and hope to have a permanent certified substitute in place shortly.

·         Mr. Chris Solimene filled in as our part time 6th and 7th grade chorus substitute.  He has a business to run and was just staying until the winter concert.   I know the rumor mill out there has suggested that he was fired.  There is no truth in that story! Mr. Chris will still be in charge of our after school drama program – be sure to check below for news on the spring musical. In the meantime, if you know of anyone who is looking for a part time choral position – please send them our way.

·         Mr. Tom Grasso, an eighth grade special education teacher, is awaiting orders for military training as well.   Right now we anticipate that he will be out of district from January 18 through the first week of April.

5.       After school activities: (for daily up to date information – please see our HKMS calendar on our web page).

·         Spring musical auditions have begun THIS WEEK for PETER PAN for grades 7 and 8.  Permission slips are available in the main office.

·         The winter intramural program will begin with fitness training while the basketball season is underway.  Grades 7 and 8 are scheduled for Mondays from 2:50 – 4:00.  Grades 5 and 6 on Wednesdays and Grades 5 – 8 on Fridays.  Training starts next week (January 14).  Students can pick up a permission slip from Ms. Anderson in the gym.  There are only 24 stations in the fitness room, so there is a limit to this activity.

·         This week we have boys’ and girls’ basketball games on Tuesday and Thursday.  Please check our daily MS calendar on the web site for the location and times of all games.  Our MS Swim team will have its first home meet on Wednesday beginning at 3:30 at the HKHS pool.

·         Winter clubs will start at the end of the month.  A full listing of offerings will be sent out to parents on the January 21 email.

·         The yearbook club will meet this week afterschool on Friday

6.       Thanks to our thrifty students, we were able to donate $1050 from the Penny Wars to the TV 17 Holiday Show for their designated scholarship funds.   Our 8th grade officially won – so they will be rewarded with an ice cream social tomorrow Tuesday (1/8).

7.       Many parents call when there is snow day asking what the rotation will be when students return to school (so they can pack gym clothes or send in the band instrument.  For planning purposes – we lose that day in the schedule and continue with the previously scheduled day.  It will all come out even at the end of the school year when we add days on there.  TO help you plan have included a table below with the rotation days for this month.  The letters tell you what period we start with, the numbers tell you whether we are following a day 1/day 2 specials schedule. There is a deviation on the half days (January 22 and January 23) as only 4 periods meet each day:
